What are the responsibilities and job description for the Native Plant Propagation Specialist / Nursery Grower position at Bayhead Ecological Solutions, LLC?
Overview
The Native Plant Propagation Specialist / Nursery Grower will oversee and support seed collection, seed processing, germination trials, greenhouse operations, and nursery production. The primary focus of this role is developing effective propagation protocols and improving the production of Florida native trees, shrubs, grasses, palms, wildflowers, and wetland species for restoration and landscape projects.
This is a hands-on position involving seed handling, greenhouse and nursery work, plant care, experimentation, and production management. The role is focused on propagation and growing—not primarily landscape maintenance.
Responsibilities
- Collect, clean, process, dry, store, and inventory native plant seeds
- Perform seed dormancy treatments, scarification, stratification, and other pre-germination treatments
- Conduct, monitor, and document seed germination trials
- Develop and refine species-specific propagation protocols
- Manage greenhouse and nursery production operations
- Grow and maintain plug trays, liners, and container-grown plants
- Monitor and manage irrigation, fertilization, and growing media
- Identify and address plant pests, diseases, and production issues
- Maintain detailed germination, inventory, and production records
- Track germination rates and improve overall production efficiency
- Manage plants through the complete propagation process, from seed to finished plant
- Help expand the nursery’s Florida native plant production program
- Support native plant production for ecological restoration and landscape projects
Skills
- Experience in native plant propagation, commercial nursery production, seed germination, horticulture, or a related field
- Knowledge of seed handling, germination requirements, and plant propagation techniques
- Familiarity with Florida native plants is preferred
- Experience with greenhouse production, irrigation, fertilization, and nursery plant care
- Ability to conduct propagation trials, document results, and adjust methods based on outcomes
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple stages of plant production
- Willingness to experiment, troubleshoot, and improve growing methods
- Ability to perform hands-on nursery and greenhouse work
A degree in horticulture, plant science, restoration ecology, or a related field is welcomed, but practical nursery and propagation experience is equally important.
We are especially interested in candidates with experience managing the complete growing process:
Seed → Treatment → Germination → Plug → Liner → Finished Plant
Join us in cultivating native plants that support ecological health! This role is perfect for individuals eager to apply their horticultural expertise in a meaningful way while working outdoors in a vibrant nursery environment.
