What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lab Technician position at Bay State Milling Company?
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
• Set up, adjust, calibrate and operate laboratory equipment and instruments such as but not limited to chemical balance scales, moisture, grinding and sieving tests, and other equipment.
• Test materials used as ingredients and other products for such qualities as purity, stability, density.
• Records test results on standardized forms and writes test reports describing procedures used.
• Cleans and sterilizes laboratory equipment.
• Perform metal detector tests; evaluate magnet findings and metal detector kick out.
• Conduct pre-operational inspections, allergen swabbing (when needed) and make determination when production line is released.
• Assist with label control and conduct label approval and verification
• Manage all retains collected and confirm finished product meets set quality and physical/chemical attributes. Release tested product with in spec for sales.
• Record test results on standardized forms and writes test reports describing procedures used. Enter test results of incoming and finished product in the ERP Tool (AX) and ensure that results are in specification. Assign batches to correct disposition code or TIERS so product is available for production to mill.
• Manage Preventative Controls and verification/monitoring such as allergen changeover, temperature monitoring, Metal detection, label verification and others assigned for quality department. Provide training to employees on certain PC’s and conduct observations that those PC’s are completed per policy.
• Provide assistance to shipping and receiving department on trailer inspections, product inspections and documentation.
• Maintains, Cleans and sterilizes laboratory equipment.
• Participate in internal and external Proficiency Testing programs.
• Assist and get familiar with facility compliance, food safety, and employee safety training utilizing BSM’s Alchemy System and other resources
• Assist and get familiar with internal and external quality audits both from customers and due to certification requirements
• Monitor and report on quality standards, deviations, and cost/value opportunities for all products manufactured in the facility
• Manage packaging and shipping customer/sales sample requests both domestic and international. Keep the sample requests log up to date and communicate/inform sales when samples are shipped or are not available

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Minimum requirement is a high school diploma or equivalent. Must possess excellent communication skills. Fluent computer skills with a strong emphasis on P.C. based spreadsheet programs.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Must speak fluent English as the primary language. Must have the ability to read, analyze, and interpret memos, general business communications, technical procedures, and governmental regulations and/or labels. Must have the ability to write in English and complete reports.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Must posses the ability to work with mathematical concepts and apply concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to analytical situations. This person is responsible for the supervision all lab functions and Lab coordination when Lab Manager is absent.
REASONING ABILITY
