Job Summary: The Surgery Center Nurse is responsible for providing high-quality care to patients undergoing surgical procedures in an ophthalmology setting. This role involves assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care, ensuring a safe and efficient surgical environment. The nurse collaborates closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to deliver optimal patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
1.) Preoperative Care
- Conduct comprehensive preoperative assessments, including medical history, physical examination, and patient education.
- Verify patient identity, surgical procedure, and surgical site according to established protocols.
- Prepare patients for surgery by providing necessary instructions, starting IV, administering preoperative medications, and ensuring patient comfort.
2.) Intraoperative Care:
- Assist during surgical procedures by providing sterile supplies, handling instruments, and assisting the surgical team as needed.
- Monitor and record vital signs, patient responses, and surgical site conditions.
- Ensure strict adherence to aseptic techniques and infection control measures.
3.) Postoperative Care:
- Monitor patients in the recovery room, assessing vital signs, pain levels, and overall recovery progress.
- Provide post-surgical education to patients and families, including instructions for medication management and follow-up appointments.
- Evaluate and address any complications or adverse reactions promptly.
4.) Patient and Family Support:
- Offer emotional support and reassurance to patients and their families before, during, and after surgery.
- Communicate effectively with patients and families, addressing their concerns and providing clear explanations of procedures and care plans.
5.) Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care and ensure a smooth surgical process.
- Document patient care and surgical events accurately and thoroughly in the medical record.
6.) Safety and Compliance:
- Adhere to all safety protocols and infection control guidelines to maintain a safe and sterile environment.
- Stay updated on industry best practices, regulatory requirements, and advancements in surgical nursing.
7.) Administrative Duties:
- Assist in managing surgical schedules, ensuring that equipment and supplies are ready and available.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and contribute to the development of policies and procedures.
Qualifications:
- Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from an accredited program.
- Licensure: Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in South Carolina.
- Certifications: BLS (Basic Life Support) required; additional certifications in perioperative nursing preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of two years of nursing experience, preferably in a surgical or perioperative setting.
- Skills:
- Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
- Proficiency in using electronic medical records and surgical equipment.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift/move patients as needed.
