This is technical work in the operation and maintenance of the County's water distribution system, including but not limited to water lines, water meters, valves, fire hydrants, air/vacuum release devices, backflow preventers and related components. General supervision is received from Distribution Technician II who reviews work primarily for accuracy, adherence to established policies and accepted procedures of technical operation.
- Assists with repairs, testing, operating and performing preventative maintenance on water lines, water meters, valves fire hydrants, air/vacuum relief devices, backflow preventers, and related water distribution equipment.
- Performs periodic reading and recording of water meters.
- Assists in performing tests to determine accuracy of water meters and in making repairs and/or replacing water meters as needed.
- Performs work in the making of wet and dry taps on water mains.
- The employer may add to or change duties at any time and as determined by the County and its leaders to best ensure that the public is served through the work of the Department.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Possess a high school diploma or equivalent; AND
- One (1) year experience working with water meters and distribution systems.
- A comparable amount of training and/or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications with the exception of the required certification.
Licenses and/or Certifications
- Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a valid Florida driver license upon offer of employment with a driving record acceptable to the County Driving Policy and insurance program.
- As deemed necessary, may be required to obtain and maintain a Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License.
- Must obtain and maintain a Class Level 3 Distribution Certification, as issued by the State of Florida (FAC 62-602) within a period of two (2) years, however, satisfactory progress toward obtaining the certification must be demonstrated within one (1) year of hire as a condition of employment.
- Maintaining the Class Level 3 Distribution license in the first year is acceptable.
- May be required to complete a Backflow certification course.
- Knowledge of the functions and servicing requirements of water lines, water meters, valves, fire hydrants, air/vacuum relief devices, backflow preventers and related water distribution equipment.
- Knowledge of the County water system, source of supply, treatment methods, and more particularly the distribution system.
- Knowledge of MOT/Work Zone Safety procedures.
- Knowledge of Cartegraph and Harmony is recommended.
- Knowledge of Utility locations.
- Knowledge of project management and organizational skills.
- Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Ability to have excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work and maintain reliable full-time attendance.
- Ability to comprehend, speak, and read the English language.
- Ability to have and maintain good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with the public.
- Ability to operate light duty and heavy duty equipment (i.e. backhoes, end loaders and tractors, diesel pumps, etc.).
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, subordinates and supervisors.
Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions
Work is primarily performed indoors but requires some exposure to environmental changes (e.g., outdoor weather and/or field conditions, warehouses, garages, etc.) or irate customers, extreme noise, odors, heights and/or dust.
This position requires some exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g., exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment, etc.). This position may require the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and may include completing and successfully passing medical evaluations or clearances.
This position requires stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, visual acuity (i.e. seeing up close, seeing far away, depth perception), kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, climbing, finger movement, repetitive motions. This position may require frequent lifting and carrying of 25-50lbs, and occasionally up to 100lbs.

Work Location
Not Eligible for Remote Work - This position is assigned to a county worksite. Due to the non-portable nature of the essential functions of this position, this position is not eligible for telework.
