This position performs experienced service work while caring for impounded animals under general supervision in the Bay County Animal Shelter. This includes feeding and observing the condition of animals held in the Animal Shelter, maintaining sanitary and humane conditions at the Shelter, and providing assistance to the public on animal related matters. This position reports to the Animal Services Division Manager.
- Checks animals brought to the Animal Shelter for registration and inoculation.
- Records details of animal history; such as weight, food intake and license number.
- Feeds and provides water to animals according to schedules. Cleans and disinfects cages, pens, and yards at the Animal Shelter.
- Provides daily exercise for animals in the shelter.
- Assists in evaluating animals eligible for adoption.
- Observes animals for signs of illness and reports findings to supervisor.
- Euthanizes animals, following established procedures in selecting and segregating animals for euthanasia to ensure only identified animals are euthanized.
- Bathes shelter animals and completes laundry as needed.
- Administers medicine under the supervision of the Veterinarian.
- Performs manual custodial and housekeeping tasks, and preventative maintenance and repair of equipment.
- The employer may add to or change duties at any time and as determined by the County and its leaders to best ensure that the public is served through the work of the Department.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Possess a high school diploma or the equivalent; AND
- Six (6) months professional experience in public contact or kennel worker in a public shelter.
- Additional qualifying education and/or experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted on a year for year basis.
- Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a valid Florida driver license upon offer of employment with a driving record acceptable to the County Driving Policy and insurance program.
- Possess a Euthanasia Certification or obtain within six months of hire as a condition of employment.
- Knowledge of pet breeds, and typical dog and cat behavior.
- Knowledge of techniques used in the care and feeding of animals.
- Knowledge of humane methods of care, restraint and handling of animals.
- Knowledge of practices, policies and procedures of Bay County Animal Control.
- Must have good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with public.
- Outstanding project management and organizational skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Expertise in the use of MS Word, Excel, and Outlook is essential.
- Ability to use special types of equipment.
- Ability to comprehend, speak and read the English language.
- Ability to work and maintain reliable full-time attendance.
- Ability to deal with the public in an effective and courteous manner.
- Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.

Work is performed indoors and outdoors on a daily basis. This position requires moderate exposure to environmental changes (e.g., outdoor weather and/or field conditions, warehouses, garages, etc.) or irate customers, extreme noise, odors, fumes or airborne particles; dangerous animals, toxic and caustic chemicals, heights and/or dust.
This position requires some exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g., exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment, etc.). This position may require the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and may include completing and successfully passing medical evaluations or clearances.
This position requires stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, visual acuity (i.e. seeing up close, seeing far away, depth perception), kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, climbing, finger movement, repetitive motions. This position requires dealing with animals, alive or dead, capturing, restraining, handling, lifting up to 100 lbs. and carrying up to 100lbs.
Special Requirements:
May be subject to emergency management situations and answering emergency calls that may require working afterhours, weekends and holidays.
Work Location:
Not Eligible for Remote Work -This position is assigned to a county worksite. Due to the non-portable nature of the essential functions of this position, this position is not eligible for telework.
Salary : $34,258 - $59,946
