What are the responsibilities and job description for the Survey Technician position at Bay County, FL?
This is skilled technical work as a team member of the survey crew. An employee in this class is responsible for performing professional surveying/engineering work using advanced, highly technical instruments to gather, store and process field data. Work is performed under the supervision of the Survey Party Chief.
- Operates electronic total station survey instrument to gather data, import design coordinates and export adjusted data to drafters.
- Operates automatic level to accurately establish benchmarks and vertical control throughout the County.
- Operates GPS receivers to determine survey grade horizontal positions.
- Operates hydrographic boat and outboard engine.
- Serves as a survey crew member to establish land boundaries, easements, rights-of-way and topographic surveys for the preparation of drawings and reports.
- Gathers hydrographic survey data and performs construction layout for the dredge program.
- Produces accurate survey notes and sketches in field books and is responsible for archiving the same.
- Assists in maintaining a computer-based benchmark recovery program for over 1000 known vertical control points throughout the county.
- Provides construction layout and staking for engineering projects.
- Cleans and care for instruments, equipment, survey trucks and hydro boat and outboard engine.
- Responsible for the upkeep and stocking of supplies in the survey truck each morning prior to the start of the work day.
- Performs mathematical computations for survey lines, angles and controls.
- Regular reliable full-time attendance as scheduled.
- The employer may add to or change duties at any time and as determined by the County and its leaders to best ensure that the public is served through the work of the Department.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Graduation from high school or the equivalent.
- Two (2) years of field surveying experience.
- Ability to obtain an FDOT Intermediate Level Maintenance of Traffic Certificate.
- Must be able to comprehend, speak and read the English language.
- Must have and maintain good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with the public.
LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS:
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Florida driver license upon offer of employment with a driving
- Knowledge of surveying instruments, equipment, practices, and survey procedures.
- Knowledge of mathematics, specifically trigonometry and geometry.
- Must have good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with public.
- Outstanding project management and organizational skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to operate a small boat and outboard engine.
- Ability to utilize county’s G.I.S. software to create maps and queries information from the County database.
- Ability to understand and interpret information from plats, survey drawings and construction plans.
- Ability to continue productive survey work in the absence of the Survey Party Chief.
- Sufficient physical stamina to work long hours outdoors, occasionally under adverse weather conditions.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Work is primarily performed outdoors in varying and adverse weather; work in water, brush and ditches. Work requires moderate exposure to one or more disagreeable conditions (i.e., irate customers, inclement weather, excessive noise, extreme temperatures, odors or dust).
This position requires some exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g., exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment, etc.). This position may require the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and may include completing and successfully passing medical evaluations.
Stooping, sitting, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pulling, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception. Ability to frequently lift and carry equipment 25-50lbs. and on occasion up to 100lbs; manual dexterity and mobility; intermittent exertion when performing duties.
