The Position:
Chain Person is an intermediate level position which assists the Survey Party Chief in day‐to‐day field work.
Supervision Received and Exercised:
Immediate supervision is provided by the Survey Party Chief. General supervision is provided by higher level professionals or management level personnel.
Qualifications:
Mental Requirements: The work requires a combination of the following mental requirements, including but not limited to the following: showing a strong focus on quality coupled with efficiency; understanding and following oral and written instructions; demonstrating a strong work ethic; establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships; ability to read, write and perform basic math; ability to form questions based on the interpretation and comprehension of the task at hand; the ability and willingness to follow instructions; the ability to deal with people tactfully; and the mental capacity to generalize and reason.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Assigned duties and responsibilities require both office and field work. Typical office work would consist of using a personal computer and filing documents. Field work involves climbing up and down hills, traversing uneven terrain, walking long distances on various surfaces and through different types of vegetation carrying surveying equipment; and the use of machetes and other hand tools to cut through vegetation.
Education and Experience: An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job as listed above. A typical way to obtain knowledge and abilities would be:
Education:
Have possession of a high school diploma or a general equivalency diploma (GED).
Experience:
Minimum of 1 year experience in land surveying (required).
Licenses:
Valid California Class C Driver’s License and maintenance of a satisfactory driving record.
Examples of Duties:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential: Knowledge of land surveying principles and practices; familiarity with survey equipment, including Trimble Robotic Station, data collector and GPS; ability to calibrate a prism rod; assist in clearing brush; assist in taking notes; assist in preparing supplies, maintaining records of time and materials used and operate transits and levels; and knowledge of the care, cleaning, and use of a variety of surveying tools and equipment, including field radios; know how to operate, check, and perform basic field adjustments on rods, compass, transits, levels, tribrachs, theodolites, total stations, robotic total stations, data collectors, tripods, and GPS equipment.
Important: Operate assigned vehicles skillfully and safely; observe safe driving practices; able to provide flexibility in work schedule with the ability to perform overtime work if requested. Perform related duties as assigned.
Work Environment:
Work is performed indoors and outdoors, using a computer, other office equipment and surveying equipment; working alone; working around or with others; exposure to heat and cold; change in temperature/humidity; slippery/uneven surfaces; walking long distances; standing and sitting for long periods of time.
