If the answer is yes, the Planning and Climate Protection Team is looking for you! Our team provides strategic direction to the Air District’s climate protection efforts and coordinates policy work with state, regional and local agencies.
As an Advanced Projects Advisor, you will be a thought leader who coordinates and leads the agency’s efforts to support clean air and health equity through the building sector. A major project in your portfolio will be coordinating the implementation planning of the Air District’s Zero-NOx Appliance Rules that apply to space and water heaters by serving as the staff lead for the multi-stakeholder Implementation Working Group (IWG), which combines informed discussion, co-learning, and research to advise the Air District about challenges and solutions regarding the rules. You will also be an active member of an interdisciplinary agency team collaborating to advance, accelerate, and support clean building policies, programs and projects across the region. Success will require strong project management and stakeholder engagement skills, expertise in technical and policy issues, and strategic thinking and communications.
In this role, you will:
- Serve as the staff lead for the IWG and be responsible for developing and managing the overall workplan and timelines, and ensuring high-quality completion of all project deliverables.
- Work with colleagues and external contractors to plan, conduct, and follow up on IWG meetings, including preparing agendas, meeting materials, and communicating with IWG members as needed.
- Coordinate IWG consultant research projects, including scoping and contracting work, reviewing and commenting on draft work products, and supporting accessible communication and understanding of findings.
- Work closely with the Air District’s’ internal project team to analyze policy issues, advise on regulatory matters and activities, develop and deliver presentations, and write and review reports, talking points, FAQs and other communication materials for internal and external audiences including executive leadership and the Board of Directors.
- Provide strategic thinking, organizing and serve as staff lead for the Air District’s broader work on clean buildings.
To be successful in this role, you must be a strong team player who is able to adapt to changing circumstances and priorities. You are a proactive self-starter able to work successfully with limited guidance, but also good at collaborating with colleagues and leading teams. You have strong problem-solving skills –paying attention to details without getting lost in them. You have excellent communication skills – both written and verbal – and use them to build relationships and trust between the Air District, community partners, and other agencies to advance critical regional policies.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills is:
Equivalent to graduation from a four year college or university with major coursework in environmental studies, engineering, business or public administration or a closely related field and three years of experience in air quality management.
Definition
Under direction, provides a variety of technical and administrative support to the District; conducts specialized studies and projects; serves as the District's liaison with other agencies; performs related work as assigned.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This specialized class performs complex technical and administrative work in a variety of areas for the District. Assignments tend to be project oriented and require significant independent action and judgment. Incumbents may represent the District in strategic situations and speak with the authority of the District, when so assigned. Supervision of others may or may not be assigned to this classification. This class is distinguished from Senior Advanced Projects Advisor in that the latter has managerial responsibilities.
About the Planning and Climate Division
The Planning and Climate Protection Division is responsible for preparing plans to meet state and federal air quality standards and assisting local communities, cities, counties, and regional agencies improve air quality and advance climate protection efforts. Division staff work on the Air District’s Community Health Protection Program implementing Assembly Bill 617; partner with impacted and overburdened communities and their local governments to reduce local air pollution, climate impacts and improve health outcomes; and work collaboratively to integrate air quality, health and climate protection into local and regional air quality plans, projects, and programs.
The Division is responsible for developing the Air District’s California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) air quality and climate impact thresholds of significance and for developing and keeping current data, tools and guidelines to assist lead agencies complete air quality and climate impact analyses.

Salary : $145,496 - $176,852
