Patient Sitter

The Patient Observer (Sitter) provides continuous, direct observation to ensure a safe, supportive, and comfortable environment for patients identified as a risk to themselves or others. Working under the direction of the Registered Nurse, the Patient Observer assists with specific non-clinical tasks based on patient needs while maintaining strict confidentiality at all times. This role supports both the Emergency Department and inpatient nursing units. When not assigned to direct observation, the Patient Observer may assist with additional ancillary duties as requested.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide constant visual observation of assigned patients to promote safety and prevent injury.
• Report any changes in patient behavior, condition, or safety concerns to the nursing staff immediately.
• Support patient comfort by assisting with non-clinical tasks such as repositioning, ambulation support, or basic comfort measures as directed.
• Maintain patient privacy, confidentiality, and dignity in accordance with organizational and regulatory standards.
• Communicate clearly and respectfully with patients, families, and clinical teams.
• Document observations and follow all assigned protocols and workflows.
• Perform ancillary support tasks when not engaged in direct observation duties.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience required.
• Some college coursework or an Associate’s Degree preferred.
• Current BLS certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) required.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to show kindness, empathy, and professionalism in patient interactions.
• Ability to communicate patient needs clearly to nursing and physician staff.

Job Type: Contract

Pay: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
