Bax Engineering is seeking an experienced and highly skilled Design Technician II – Civil to support our Commercial, Municipal, and Residential Design Departments. This role is ideal for a Civil 3D technician who can independently produce complete, construction ready plan sets, assist with design solutions, and support project teams with a high level of technical proficiency. The Design Technician II – Civil will contribute directly to project efficiency, technical accuracy, and overall design quality across multiple disciplines.
About the Role
The Design Technician II – Civil will lead the preparation of construction plans including site layouts, grading, utilities, stormwater features, roadway design, and other components of site and utility design. This individual is expected to demonstrate strong Civil 3D skills, work with minimal oversight, and understand how to apply engineering and municipal standards across commercial, residential, and public infrastructure projects. Familiarity with local codes and plan requirements within St. Charles County and surrounding jurisdictions is essential for success in this role.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Advanced Drafting and Civil Design
- Prepare complete construction grade plan sets using AutoCAD Civil 3D with a high level of accuracy and independence.
- Develop detailed site plans, grading plans, utility plans, roadway alignments, stormwater features, and associated construction details.
- Build and manage complex surfaces, corridors, grading groups, alignments, pipe networks, and sheet sets.
- Interpret engineering sketches, markups, verbal direction, and preliminary designs into fully developed plan sheets.
- Apply city, county, and state standards, ordinances, and submittal requirements to all drawings.
Project Coordination and Quality Control
- Work closely with project managers and engineers to ensure design intent is fully captured and documented.
- Review drawings for accuracy, consistency, and compliance with applicable codes and requirements.
- Assist in organizing project drawing files, ensuring standardization and version control.
- Support design revisions, redlines, conflict checks, and updates throughout project design and permitting.
Technical Leadership and Team Support
- Provide mentorship and support to Design Technician I level staff.
- Assist engineers with layout challenges, grading solutions, utility routing, and stormwater considerations.
- Participate in internal project coordination meetings and contribute to design discussions.
- Help develop and refine drafting standards, templates, and Civil 3D workflows.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Strong proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, with advanced skill in surfaces, grading, alignments, corridors, and pipe networks.
- Ability to independently produce complete construction grade plan sets.
- Familiarity with local codes, ordinances, and submittal requirements for St. Charles County and surrounding municipalities.
- Strong understanding of site development concepts including grading, utilities, stormwater, and roadway layout.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to producing high quality technical work.
- Ability to interpret and apply engineering sketches, plan sets, and technical instructions.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship.
Preferred
- Associate Degree in Drafting, CAD Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, or related field.
- At least 6 or more years of experience preparing civil site development or public infrastructure plans.
- Experience in commercial, residential, and/or municipal sectors.
- Experience with stormwater design concepts, utility layout, and roadway design.
- Experience working in a consulting engineering environment.

Pay: $70,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
