    POSITION SUMMARY
    The Crater is a hands-on carpentry role that is responsible for framing, crating, shipping and rigging/crane operations. The Crater builds crates and pallets for small units to very large units. This position reports to the Shipping & Crating Manager.

    JOB FUNCTIONS
    Include the following, but other duties may be assigned.
    • Calculates and builds proper-sized crates, boxes, pallets, and framing for small to very large units (1O' x 20' and larger) from drawings/diagrams or verbal instructions.
    • Accurately measure and utilize software to design crates/pallets
    • Operates a variety of carpentry hand and power tools or equipment, such as hand saw, mortise, drill press and wood lathe.
    • Responsible for crane operations in order to handle the size units required for such an operation and loading onto trucks.
    • Work with Shipping Lead and production to control/schedule/prioritize units for timely rigging/crating/shipment.
    • Keep records on incoming and outgoing shipments and prepares crating/rigging documents for shipment.
    • Partner with the Logistics team on necessary or required paperwork and documentation for shipments.
    • Visually inspect units coming from production and prior to shipment for visible damage or defects.
    • Ensures proper documentation attached to each unit.
    • Work with Quality Control for shipment inspection.
    • May need to coordinate and work with carriers for scheduling and handling shipments.
    • Provide shipment weights and dimensions, tracking numbers to appropriate internal and external customers if necessary.
    • Prepares standard and ad hoc reports as needed.
    • Performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures.
    • Maintains files and records for the department in computerized or hard copy.
    • Utilizes shipping procedures, routes, rates, and studies shipping notices, bills of lading, invoices, orders, etc. to determine shipping priorities, work assignments, and shipping methods required to meet shipping and receiving schedules.
    • Determines space requirements and position of shipment on trucks and lays-out position of shipment.
    • Inspects loading operations to ensure compliance with shipping specifications. Seals loaded truck doors.

    ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
    • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
    • A minimum of two (2) years of shipping experience with domestic shipments (exports a plus), LTL, truckload and containerized shipments.
    • Experience in building crates and boxes for the shipment of goods.
    • Strong mechanical knowledge and minimum of three (3) years forklift experience.
    • Ability to use carpentry hand and power tools in a safe manner.
    • Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel) and ERP systems.
    • Solid verbal and written communication skills.
    VALUED BUT NOT REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
    • Associate of Science Degree or Career Studies Certificate in Mechatronics or related field.
    • Experience with computer-aided design (CAD) software to design and build shipping crates.
    • Rigging experience preferred. Rigging certification a plus.

    • No direct reports.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands, fingers, handle, or grasp; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. Vision abilities required. The employee must be able to lift 50 pounds without assistance. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds or ask for assistance with lifting.

    Normal hours are from 7:00am to 3:30pm EST Monday thru Friday, with some evening and weekend hours required at times. The noise levels in some manufacturing facilities frequently may exceed the normal dBA.
