Position Summary:
The Northwestern Academy of Visual and Performing Arts seeks a dedicated Math 180 Teacher to provide targeted math intervention to students in grades 6–8 who are performing below grade level in mathematics. The ideal candidate will deliver the Math 180 program with fidelity, while collaborating with colleagues to align Tier 1 instruction with Tier 2/3 interventions. This teacher will play a critical role in closing math achievement gaps, accelerating student growth, and preparing students to succeed in higher-level math courses and beyond.
This teacher will create a structured, student-centered environment where struggling math learners engage in data-driven instruction, personalized practice, and problem-solving activities that foster both skill mastery and confidence.
Position Responsibilities:
Instructional Delivery
- Implement the Math 180 intervention program with fidelity to support struggling math learners in grades 6–8.
- Use student data (e.g., STAR, MAP, classroom performance) to identify students for intervention and monitor progress.
- Deliver explicit math instruction targeting number sense, computation, algebraic reasoning, problem-solving, and math fluency.
- Create individualized learning opportunities that accelerate student growth in mathematics and build academic confidence.
- Establish a classroom culture that motivates and supports students in taking ownership of their math learning.
Collaboration and Professional Development
- Collaborate with math teachers, instructional coaches, and administrators to align Tier 1 and Tier 2 math instruction.
- Participate in PLCs and professional development focused on math intervention, data-driven instruction, and engagement strategies.
- Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress, growth, and areas for continued support.
Assessment and Reflection
- Track student progress using Math 180 data, STAR assessments, and classroom performance.
- Adjust instruction based on ongoing analysis of student achievement data.
- Guide students in setting individual math goals and reflecting on progress toward proficiency.
Qualifications:
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate (Mathematics endorsement preferred; secondary certification or middle school math strongly considered).
- Experience with math intervention programs (Math 180 or equivalent) strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of Tier 1 and Tier 2 math instruction.
- Demonstrated ability to use data to guide instructional decisions.
- Excellent communication, organization, and collaboration skills.
- Experience working with middle school students in an urban setting preferred.
