What are the responsibilities and job description for the 4th Grade Elementary Teacher position at Battle Creek Public Schools?
Description
You became a teacher to change lives. Here, you actually will.
If you’re the kind of teacher who can see a student’s potential before they see it in themselves…
who knows how to build trust with kids others have written off…
who believes that academic excellence, equity, and community aren’t buzzwords but the work—
then this is the place where your impact will matter most.
Because when you teach here, students show up. They lean in. They grow.
Not because it’s easy—but because you make school a place worth coming to.
About You — and the Opportunity Ahead
You’re looking for more than a classroom. You’re looking for purpose, mastery, belonging, and a place where great teaching is both needed and valued. You want:
- Scope: A chance to influence not just student learning, but school culture, attendance, and engagement.
- Growth: Daily opportunities to sharpen your craft alongside colleagues who analyze student work, collaborate in PLCs, and push each other to be better.
- Impact: Students who depend on strong relationships—and who flourish when they have them.
- Progression: A district investing heavily in professional development, coaching, mentorship, and instructional excellence.
- Flexibility & Innovation: Freedom to bring evidence-based practices to life—explicit instruction, data-driven teaching, tiered supports—while shaping a classroom where every student can access grade-level learning.
If that sounds like the work you’re meant to do, you’ll thrive here.
About Us
Battle Creek Public Schools (BCPS) is in the midst of one of the most ambitious transformation efforts in Michigan. Backed by a historic W.K. Kellogg Foundation investment and driven by our mission to see, challenge, and support our scholars to reach their infinite potential, we are rebuilding what an urban public school experience can be—Every Student. Every Dream. Every Day.
We serve a diverse and resilient community of learners who deserve exceptional teaching. Our students are brilliant. They are funny, perceptive, creative, and capable. They also need teachers who know how to connect, reset expectations, and deliver instruction that sticks.
Academic achievement, attendance, and behavior are real challenges here—but they are not fixed conditions. They are opportunities for the right teachers to make a measurable, life-changing difference. You will not do this work alone: our core values of academic excellence, equity, and community ground everything we do—from PLCs to interventions to how we support new staff.
Here, your classroom becomes a catalyst for something bigger: a district rewriting its story one student, one lesson, one breakthrough at a time.
What You’ll Experience as a BCPS Teacher
Instead of listing every responsibility, here is what your work will feel like:
- You’ll design learning that is clear, engaging, aligned, and rigorous—because you believe grade-level instruction is a promise, not a privilege.
- You’ll use your skill with explicit instruction, formative assessment, differentiation, and relationship-building to help students make real academic gains.
- You’ll collaborate in strong PLCs where you analyze data, plan interventions, and celebrate wins together.
- You’ll build a classroom culture where students feel seen, supported, and pushed to grow—because you set high expectations and teach them how to meet them.
- You’ll constantly refine your practice through coaching, PD, and a districtwide culture of collective responsibility.
This is challenging work. It is also deeply rewarding work. And for the right teacher, it is career-defining work.
