What are the responsibilities and job description for the Head of Operations position at Baton?
Location: Utah preferred | Remote with full Mountain Time alignment
Compensation: $140,000-$160,000 DOE equity component
Reports to: CEO
Baton is a B2B SaaS platform that helps service companies turn lost jobs into revenue. When a contractor gets a call outside their service area, is booked solid, or receives a request outside their specialty, that lead dies. Baton fixes that — letting service businesses refer those leads to a trusted partner network and receive referrals back in return.
We crossed $7M in revenue last year and are on track to double this year. We were ranked #5 fastest-growing company in Utah County and #11 on Inc.'s Regional Rocky Mountain list. We are growing fast and building the operational infrastructure to grow smart.
Our CEO is a builder. He is also, at the moment, the de facto COO, HR Director, and head of operational triage — and that is not sustainable at this pace.
We need someone who has seen a company grow from $7M to $25M and came out the other side with clean systems, a healthy team, and a repeatable operating model. Someone who does not just understand operational chaos intellectually — they have lived it, built the infrastructure to end it, and know which fires to put out first.
Operations — You are the Integrator. You audit the current state, prioritize the fixes, build the systems, and assign the owners. You also run project coordination for major strategic initiatives — new verticals, product launches, operational migrations — keeping them on time and on budget.
Finance — You will oversee a fractional CFO and a 6-person overseas finance team (bookkeeping, collections, payroll, vendor payments). You own the financial operating rhythm, the balanced scorecard, and the reporting cadence that keeps leadership making decisions from data.
People — You will stand up the HR infrastructure this company needs to scale — recruiting (7 open positions to fill), onboarding, performance frameworks, and a development culture that makes our best people want to stay.
- Calm under pressure. When systems break, you are the de-escalating force — not an additional source of stress. People feel steadier when you are in the room.
- High-tact communicator. You ask before you tell. You validate, clarify, and co-develop solutions. You build trust quickly across different personality types.
- A builder. You are energized by writing the playbook, not intimidated by the fact that it doesn't exist yet. You build systems so problems don't recur — you don't just patch holes.
- Financially fluent. You can read a P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow statement and hold a team accountable to clean, timely output.
- Data-driven. You build dashboards, not decks. You know which metrics matter at our stage and how to build the reporting rhythm that keeps a leadership team honest.
Experience we're looking for: 5 years in operational leadership, including time inside a company that scaled through the $5M–$25M range. Prior ownership of finance, HR, and recruiting — not just ops. Strong preference for digital services, SaaS, lead generation, or marketing backgrounds. Utah-based strongly preferred.
- Fast growth with the receipts to prove it — two notable rankings, $7M to $12M in a single year
- A seat at the table with real equity at a stage where it can still matter
- A CEO who genuinely wants to hand off the day-to-day and get out of your way
- A product solving a real problem for real businesses
