About the Opportunity
We’re launching a new residential treatment center (ASAM Level 3.1) in Missouri, focused on empowering individuals in recovery through compassion, structure, and evidence-based care. As a Peer Recovery Specialist, you’ll use your own lived experience to inspire hope, foster engagement, and support clients as they build and sustain recovery.

Position Overview
The Peer Recovery Specialist provides recovery-oriented support services to individuals with substance use disorders in a structured residential setting. Working under the supervision of the Clinical Supervisor, the Peer Recovery Specialist promotes wellness, models recovery, and assists clients in developing life skills, identifying strengths, and building recovery capital.
Key Responsibilities
- Client Support & Engagement:
- Provide mentorship and support based on personal lived experience with substance use recovery.
- Assist clients in developing individualized recovery plans and setting achievable personal goals.
- Encourage participation in therapeutic, educational, and community-based recovery activities.
- Promote client self-advocacy, empowerment, and independence.
- Support client orientation and integration into the residential program.
- Recovery Coaching & Education:
- Facilitate or co-facilitate recovery groups, workshops, and life skills sessions.
- Share recovery tools and coping strategies aligned with the client’s stage of change.
- Provide education on relapse prevention, community resources, and healthy living.
- Model appropriate boundaries and professional ethics in all interactions.
- Collaboration & Communication:
- Work collaboratively with counselors, case managers, nurses, and leadership to support client progress.
- Participate in treatment team meetings, shift change briefings, and staff trainings.
- Maintain accurate documentation of client interactions, services provided, and progress notes per DMH standards.
- Safety & Compliance:
- Ensure client safety and promote a recovery-focused, structured residential environment.
- Respond appropriately to client crises, behavioral concerns, or emergencies following established protocols.
- Comply with all confidentiality and HIPAA requirements.
- Support adherence to DMH, ASAM 3.1, and facility policies and procedures.
Qualifications
- Missouri Credentialing Board (MCB) certification as a Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) or Peer Recovery Specialist (PRS) required, or eligible to obtain within 90 days of hire.
- Must have lived experience with substance use recovery and maintain active recovery for at least two (2) years.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; additional education in human services or behavioral health preferred.
- Ability to engage and motivate individuals in recovery using empathy, respect, and nonjudgmental communication.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Reliable, compassionate, and team-oriented with commitment to confidentiality and ethical practice.
- Must pass background check and drug screening in accordance with DMH requirements.
Preferred Experience
- Experience working in a residential or community-based recovery program.
- Familiarity with ASAM 3.1 level of care and DMH documentation standards.
- Knowledge of 12-step, SMART Recovery, or other mutual aid programs.
- Basic computer and EMR proficiency.
Schedule
Full-time or part-time shifts available, including evening or weekend hours as needed to support program coverage.
