As Chief, this individual will provide strategic and clinical leadership for Hematologic Oncology and Radiation Oncology services at Bassett Cancer Institute, which includes overseeing cancer care delivery at Bassett Medical Center, Bassett Cancer Institute at FoxCare in Oneonta, Bassett Herkimer Specialty Services, and Cobleskill Regional Hospital. Bassett’s Regional Cancer Program has been continuously accredited by the:
- American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer as a Comprehensive Community Cancer Center since 1947
- American Society of Radiation Oncology APEX program since 2020
- American Society of Clinical Oncology QOPI program since 2021. The program is also a member of the ECOG-ACRIN with close to 30 years of participation in NCI and sponsored clinical trials. The program has a collaborative and multidisciplinary model, which includes onsite Radiation Oncologists, Surgical Oncologists, Pathologists and Radiologists, including an active weekly tumor board. The program has a comprehensive support team that includes Nurse Navigators, Social Workers, Financial Counselors, a Nutritionist and Palliative Care Practitioners.
The Department Chief will report to the Chief Clinical & Academic Officer and will have opportunities to grow and advance Oncology through the following responsibilities:
- Providing visionary leadership to Bassett Cancer Institute by fostering a culture of excellence in clinical care, education, and research. This responsibility entails creating a departmental structure designed meet the needs of specific locations and scope of service for the entire system.
- Collaborate closely with the Surgical Oncology team to ensure integrated, patient-centered care across a multidisciplinary treatment approach.
- Ensuring consistent standards across Bassett Cancer Institute and affiliated locations through quality improvement initiatives to measure and enhance patient safety, throughput, and outcomes.
- Overseeing staffing levels, workflows, and clinical activity to ensure safe, appropriate, and timely patient care.
- Leading critical interdisciplinary and comprehensive support teams that includes Nurse Navigators, Social Workers, Financial Counselors, a Nutritionist and Palliative Care Practitioners, and other key stakeholders.
- Leading recruitment and retention efforts for all locations with oncology services
- Managing the Department’s budget and other financial resources effectively and in line with organizational standards and goals.
- Providing leadership across the organization through membership on various leadership and operational committees and workgroups.

Education and Licensure
- MD/DO or equivalent with current Board certification in hematology/oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, or other related specialty with a strong clinical focus in the care of cancer patients.
- New York State medical license or eligibility for New York State medical license
- A minimum of seven years of postgraduate clinical experience in a medical or surgical specialty. This may include hematology/oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, or other related specialty with a strong clinical focus in the care of cancer patients.
- Five or more years of successful leadership experience in a Medical Director, Section/Division Head, Department Chief/Chair, or Associate Chief/Chair role.
- Proven experience in leading quality initiatives, practitioner recruitment, program administration, and/or research administration.
- Effective and strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Capacity to lead and create a culture of engagement and teamwork
- Track record of cooperative working relationships, demonstrating an ability to address stakeholder concerns.
- A high level of credibility among peers as a clinical leader in cancer care.
- Experience in recruiting, developing, and mentoring physician talent.
- Contemporary market insight regarding the current status, trends, and outlook for the healthcare delivery system.
- Experience working within a multi-hospital integrated delivery system, with concomitant understanding of the complexities of managing across a geographically distributed system of care.
