Sales Tax Manager

POSITION SUMMARY:

Manage and supervise the sales/use tax area for both Bass Pro.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Oversee the monthly filing of all sales and use tax returns for all Bass Pro entities.  This includes making sure that all sales tax returns and sales tax reconciliations are prepared, reviewing all returns, and making sure all returns are timely filed and paid.
• Manage and supervise the sales tax team.
• Set and oversee sales tax process which includes researching sales tax issues, investigating sales tax rules in various states, spotting potential audit problems, and documenting our sales tax processes and procedures.
• Oversee and coordinate sales tax audits.  This includes being a primary contact for our auditors, gathering documentation, responding to questions, doing follow-up work, and establishing correct procedures.
• Learn, understand, maintain, and update all company systems involved in the sales tax process such as Vertex, the JDA system, the POS system, OMS, and Order Control.
• Work with our IT department with integrating our sales based systems with the taxing software systems.  This includes working with monthly updates/uploads, generating reports, running tests, troubleshooting calculation problems, and dealing with customer service questions on the tax calculation process.
• Maintaining the sales tax coding and mapping of our inventory system to the tax software system.
• Filing of other sales based taxes such as Battery Tax, Tire Tax, Vehicle Inventory Tax, Use Tax, Gross Receipts tax, and Liquor Tax
• Assist the Director of Tax in any areas as needed such as planning for new operations and other endeavors.
• ALL OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED

EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

• Minimum Degree Required: Must have an accounting degree

• Experience: Five plus years of sales & use tax experience with a multi-state retail business

• Managerial experience over a sales tax team

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY:

• Strong accounting skills.  Must have an accounting degree.

• Significant systems and data processing experience with Point of Sale type systems

• Fluent in Excel

• Experience with Vertex Sales Tax Software also a plus

• Strong people skills

• Extremely organized

• Manage several different tasks at once.  Track multiple deadlines

• Self-motivated.  Takes initiative

• Needs to be able to look beyond data to see the causes and effects

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Regularly performs computer work and sits.

• Occasionally walks and stands.

• Seldom/never lifts up to 50lbs.

INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT:

• Develops objectives and general policies and procedures for a specific program or functional area of responsibility within general scope of established operational goals and plans. Day-to-day work and decisions do not require direction or review by immediate supervisor. End results are reviewed by supervisor.
