Job Summary

The Technician, Open Space position is responsible for continuous conservation and maintaining open space under the District's jurisdiction, focusing on supervising natural resources.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 21 years of age or older with a valid U.S. driver’s license.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year of experience in maintenance, construction of natural or recreational resources, ecology, botany, wildlife, horticulture, trails, landscaping, parks, or a related field.
  • Utah Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator license, equivalent license from another state, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.

The successful applicant must pass a required pre-employment background check, MVR, drug test, and subsequent mandatory checks in accordance with current District policy requirements.

Preferred But Not Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Ecology, Biology, Natural Resources Management, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of or experience using ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Online, and ESRI mobile applications.

Essential Functions

The following duties and responsibilities are intended to be representative of the work performed by the incumbent(s) in this position and are not all-inclusive.   • Perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled construction, maintenance, restoration, and repair activities of District open space and related facilities to ensure safe and efficient access for the public.
  • Perform noxious weed management using mechanical, chemical, and biological methods.
  • Perform site visits and monitor environmental systems including vegetation, wildlife, and waterways.
  • Train and lead volunteers in implementation of department projects.
  • Monitor effectiveness of management activities through site visits and systematic documentation.
  • Maintain and use the spatial database system for planning, tracking, and reporting work.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, and powered equipment, including ATVs, UTVs, e-bikes, 4WD vehicles, and spray equipment.
  • Assist in implementation of natural resource restoration projects on District Open Space.
  • Assist in winter snow removal operations and trail grooming.
  • Assist in the training and oversight of the seasonal team.

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

Knowledge Of

  • Operating hand tools, power tools, and light equipment in a skilled and safe manner.
  • Native plant species and Utah listed noxious weeds.
  • Conservation techniques and practices.
  • Computers and Microsoft Office applications.
  • GPS instruments and GIS software.
  • Related OSHA safety standards, current Safety Data Sheet (SDS) procedures, and bloodborne pathogens.

Skill And Ability To

  • Work outdoors for long periods of time in inclement weather and over uneven terrain.
  • Comprehend and follow written or oral instructions.
  • Work independently with limited supervision or collaborate with a team.
  • Communicate with the public, partner agencies, and fellow staff professionally.
  • Exhibit strong attention to detail and organization.
  • Perform all duties with safety as a top priority.

Working Conditions and Aptitudes

  • Duties are performed indoors and outdoors, including working in inclement weather, extreme temperatures, and over steep terrain.
  • Physical conditioning to hike and mountain bike long distances over varied, steep terrain.
  • Manual dexterity and coordination; high degree of spatial awareness and mental and visual alertness.
  • Occasional exposure to hazardous chemicals, vibrations, and fumes.
  • Exposure to loud noises and interruptions.
  • Work effectively with crowds and uncooperative individuals, difficult situations, emergencies, or periods of continuous demand.
  • Operation of motor vehicles on public roadways and trails.
  • Travel to and from sites, facilities, and other locations within the District; transport materials as needed.
  • Work a variety of shifts including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays depending on program needs.
  • May require emergency call-out.
  • This position is ineligible for remote work. Essential duties cannot be completed without being physically present.

Physical Requirements

  • Equal or less than 50% | Walking, bending, and other physical exertion.
  • Equal or less than 25% | Pushing, pulling, and kneeling.
  • Equal or less than 50% | Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Equal or less than 25% | Periods of sitting.

  • Equal or less than 50% | Hike and mountain bike long distances over varied, steep terrain.

$51,191.84 - $63,989.80 Annual Salary
