Summary of Position:
The Unit Coordinator provides routine clerical support, answers phones, routes callers and relays messages. The Unit Coordinator manages all departmental documents and ensures availability of supplies and the maintenance of equipment. The Unit Coordinator supports the efforts of the clinical staff.

Qualifications
Education:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent education/experience

    Experience:
  • Previous medical administrative experience preferred


    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Must perform assigned duties completely and accurately, with the ability to carry out repetitive operations under specific instructions and in accordance with established procedures.
  • Highly effective written and verbal communications skills.
  • Proficient computer skills as are required to document, communicate and enter information into the electronic medical records system.
  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
  • In compliance with patient safety standards, must be able to effectively communicate in English; Bilingual abilities preferred.

    Certifications/Licensure:
  • Current CPR/BLS certification by the American Heart Association (BLS for the Healthcare Provider) or ability to obtain prior to start date

  • Occasional travel to various health system locations.

    Essential Functions
  • Provides consistently exceptional care at all times.
  • Maintains admit/transfer log.
  • Communication:
    • Answers telephones, routes callers, takes messages and provides routine information to callers.
    • Utilizes the Fax/copy machine.
    • Assists with answering patient call-lights and relays patient needs to appropriate personnel.
    • Ensures that all messages are relayed to staff and patients in timely manner.
  • Supports Staff in provision of care:
  • Contacts applicable departments or disciplines secondary to physician orders/requests or nursing requests within time frame that supports the provision of optimal patient care.
  • Safely transports bio-hazardous samples and specimens to the clinical laboratory.
  • Obtains blood products from the blood bank utilizing the correct procedure.
  • Understands role and responds immediately and appropriately to all code situations per policy & procedure.
  • Prepares and manages the patient medical record. Ensures accurate and timely management of information.
    • Prepares medical record for admission.
    • Dismantles record following discharge.
    • Transcribes discharge orders as needed.
    • Orders patient records in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Performs routine clerical duties
    • Files reports and other department records accurately.
    • Ensures supplies are available.
    • Ensures equipment is maintained. Able to troubleshoot equipment problems.
    • Inputs changes in patient stay, room status, discharge or transfers in computer system.
  • Participates in the Shared Governance Model by engaging in unit based council and supporting clinical activities. This includes active participation in evidence-based practice and research initiatives on assigned clinical units.
  • Responds to the needs of the department by performing other duties, as necessary.
