Pay Information: Internal Hires: Pay rate will be determined based on applicable personnel rule or union contract terms. External Hires: Senior CLS starts at $49.44 per hour. Step placement and rate of pay will be determined based on relevant experience. Job Summary:

Under general direction of the Lab Director, positions at this level are responsible for implementing the department’s mission and goals, by providing expert professional clinical laboratory science services in all the clinical laboratory departments. The Sr. Clinical Laboratory Scientist has additional technical oversight in their specific department, which includes planning, competency, training, administrative and leadership activities specific to their area of responsibility. The Sr. Clinical Laboratory Scientist is assigned as the technical expert for questions or concerns with health care providers specific to clinical sections in the Clinical Laboratory.

This position description represents the work performed by Senior Clinical Lab Scientists assigned to specialty areas:

The Sr. Clinical Laboratory Scientist assumes significant leadership responsibilities, providing daily direction to other laboratory staff with regard to laboratory workload and policies and procedures. The Sr. Clinical Laboratory Scientist provides leadership and administrative activities specific to their area of responsibility and serves as a subject matter expert for laboratory testing. The incumbent is responsible for resolving technical problems with health care providers and support staff. In addition, this individual maintains knowledge and is competent to work in all sub sections of the laboratory, to include: Chemistry, Special Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Blood Banking, Serology, Microbiology, Point of Care and Molecular Diagnostics. The Sr. Clinical Laboratory Scientist motivates, coordinates and supports staff to ensure quality, clinically relevant data is reported in a timely manner to assist the provider with the diagnosis and treatment of patients. They assure that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications and that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning. Incumbents operate under general supervision of the Laboratory Director.

The Sr. Clinical Laboratory Scientist identifies and sets forth training and competency needs for new clinical laboratory scientists as well as on-going training and competency for existing CLS’s. This position requires the ability to apply critical thinking and consistently provide evaluation beyond the symptoms of a situation to identify underlying issues and root causes and to formulate/propose potential solutions and provide guidance and support to the CLS’s with this process. The incumbent is available to the organization as a subject matter expert in their department. This position is also responsible for department development for continuous improvement to meet the changing needs of the community and organization.

Depending Upon The Business Need Of The Specialty Section In The Clinical Laboratory Department, The Sr. Clinical Laboratory Scientist Is Expected To Specialize In One Of The Following Areas

  • Lead CLS and Specialist Blood Bank and Serology 2) Lead CLS and Specialist Chemistry 3) Lead CLS and Specialist Hematology, Coagulation and Body Fluid 4) Lead CLS and Specialist Microbiology 5) Lead CLS and Specialist Molecular Diagnostics/Community Testing Coordinator 6) Lead CLS and Point-of-Care Coordinator Organizational skill and ability to prioritize test requests are critical to successful performance. Multiple test requests, with different or the same priority, must be effectively organized by the individual in order to maximize diagnostic impact. A high degree of accuracy and reliability is required to ensure results that can assist in the timely diagnosis and treatment of patients. Duties require interaction with clinical staff and physicians, i.e., explanation of test results or answering a variety of questions.

Minimum Qualifications For The Job

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science or a related field.
  • Experience: Five (5) years of laboratory experience performing complex testing.
  • Certification(s): Current license as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist from a state licensing agency OR Current board certification from MT-ASCP or CLS-NCA
