What are the responsibilities and job description for the Commercial Asphalt Estimator position at Bart's Asphalt LLC?
Who we are
Bart's Asphalt is a young, fast-growing commercial asphalt and concrete company based in Jackson, serving property managers, HOAs, schools, and industrial accounts across Jackson, Lansing, and Washtenaw County. We run nine specialized crews covering paving, repairs, concrete, crack sealing, sealcoating, and line striping, and we put out over 1,000 estimates a year to keep them busy. We're looking for the person who builds those estimates.
The role
You're the one who figures out what a property actually needs and what it will take to do it right. Account managers bring you what the customer wants; you walk the site, measure it, document it, and build the real scope: quantities, crew hours, materials, equipment. Our project manager closes the loop by comparing your estimates to what jobs actually cost, so you get better every month.
This isn't price-sheet work. Every estimate requires thinking through how long a crew will be on site and what could go wrong.
What you'll do
- Produce 20–25 estimates a week for commercial repair, maintenance, paving, and concrete work
- Visit sites, take measurements, and digitally mark out work areas
- Take thorough, well-organized site photos that let crews show up knowing exactly what to do
- Price subcontractor and material quotes, write change orders, and hand off scope to foremen
- Review estimated-vs-actual results with the project manager and tighten your numbers
- Keep every estimate and deal current in HubSpot
- Occasionally meet customers on site (roughly 10% of your time; this is mostly a back-office role)
How we'll measure success
Two numbers: how fast estimates turn around, and how close your estimates land to actual job costs.
Who you are
- Comfortable with numbers and able to build a bid from quantities and labor hours, not a lookup table
- Thorough: you don't miss scope because you didn't feel like walking the back lot
- Accountable when nobody is watching; you manage your own day and your own queue
- Personable and professional with customers when they come out to the site
- Organized and comfortable working in a CRM (HubSpot experience is a plus)
- Asphalt, paving, concrete, or general construction estimating experience is a strong plus. A sharp field person with a foreman background who wants to move into the office will also be considered.
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record (you'll be driving a company vehicle daily)
Compensation and benefits
- $65,000–$77,500 salary, based on experience
- 401(k) with 4% company match
- 12 PTO days plus paid holidays
- Company vehicle for site visits
Schedule and how this job works
This is a salaried position, and you manage your own day. You start at our Jackson shop at 8 a.m., pick up the company vehicle, and work your queue: site visits, measurements, and estimates. Most of the year that's a normal workday. In the spring and summer rush it isn't, and we expect you to stay on top of your quotes rather than let them pile up.
We don't track hours; we track turnaround time and whether your numbers hold up on the job. If you want a role where someone tells you when to clock out, this isn't it.
Where this goes
We're growing quickly, and this seat is the best possible training ground for pavement evaluation. Estimators who master it have a clear path into sales and account management.

Send your resume and a short note about your estimating or field background to [email]. We're reviewing applications starting October 16 and filling the seat as soon as we find the right person.
