Highway Heavy Equipment Operator

This position performs a variety of highway construction and maintenance work to keep the roadways and roadsides safe and in good repair according to standards.  In addition, this position is responsible for the operation of heavy equipment and other specialized equipment used in building, shaping and maintaining road surfaces and culvert replacements.  Winter maintenance activities are also required for this position. 
3 POSITIONS AVAILABLE: 
1) Asphalt Paving: Qualified candidates would have experience in working around asphalt paving equipment including, pavers, screeds, rollers, skid steers, and compactors.
2) Crushing Division (aggregate crushing operation): Qualified candidates would have experience in working around aggregate crushing equipment including, Jaw and Cone Crushers, screen decks, loaders and skid steers.
3) Heavy Equipment Operator. Qualified candidates would have general experience with Loaders, Graders, Excavators, Dozers, etc.

 
  
  1. Safely operates assigned tucks and heavy construction equipment, machinery, and tools for highway and bridge construction and maintenance construction; and maintenance materials handling. 
  1. Operate grader to prepare road surfaces for hot mix. 
  1. Operate grader for building, shaping and maintaining road surfaces. 
  1. Responds to weather situations including snow and ice events, high water, washouts, and others as directed. 
  1. Responds to unforeseen emergency situations including cargo spills, traffic accidents, blocked roads, pavement buckles, and others as directed. 
  1. Performs general highway maintenance and related activities as assigned, including snow and ice removal, temporary and permanent asphalt surface repairs, patching holes, sawing pavement, concrete repairs, sign repairs, clearing brush, hauling materials, flagging traffic, roadway vegetation control, sweeping intersections, routering and sealing road cracks, culvert and drainage work, removing dead animals and trash and buildings and facilities maintenance repairs. 
  1. Perform daily inspection and service to equipment.  Maintains records of inspection and services. 
  1. Perform minor repairs, maintenance, and preventative maintenance to assigned equipment as scheduled or directed. 
  1. Ensures all activities are carried out in a safe manner; adheres to all County safety regulations; assists co-workers in the safe handling of equipment; ensures equipment is safely operated and driving laws are obeyed; ensures all regulations pertaining to the safe use of equipment are understood and followed. 
  1. Reports all accidents to the appropriate authority.  Follows all policies for reporting, investigating, and follow-up of equipment incidents, or personal injuries.  
  1. Cleans and maintains equipment and storage area. 
  1. Other duties as assigned. 
 
  • High school diploma or equivalent. 
  • Minimum of four (4) years’ work experience in heavy equipment operation. 
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License. 
  • Work Zone Safety Training, MSHA, confined space, hazmat, first aid, CPR, FISTA, HMA Tech I/II and AGG Tech I/II  may be required upon hire based upon assignment of equipment.   
  • Appointment will be conditional upon successful completion of a pre-employment drug test. 
  • Must obtain Tanker and Trailer endorsements within 6 months of hire. 
 
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of assigned equipment and machinery including hydraulic systems, trailers, towing, fastening and covering of loads, lifting capacities and proper loading to meet safe and efficient weight distributions. 
  • Knowledge of Digger’s Hotline, utility markings and clearances and rules for safe equipment operation in close proximity to underground and overhead utility facilities. 
  • Knowledge of construction industry safety rules and ability to utilize Personal Protective Equipment. 
  • Knowledge of legal load limits for assigned equipment and vehicles. 
  • Ability to safely perform flagging operations in accordance with industry guidelines. 
  • Ability to install and maintain traffic control devices in accordance with industry guidelines. 
  • Ability to operate assigned machinery and equipment skillfully and safely in close proximity to vehicular traffic, grade and alignment stakes, slopes, trucks, other construction equipment, laborers and utilities. 
  • Ability to read and understand grade and alignment stakes set by others. 
  • Ability to safely load, unload, and transport equipment to and from job sites. 
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor when dealing with the public. 
  • Ability to take control of situations in a responsible manner. 
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and establish and maintain effective working relationships.  
  • Ability to comprehend, retain and apply County, State, and Federal policies and legislation, i.e. local ordinances, procedure manuals, SDS sheets, safety manuals and warning labels. 
  • Ability to maintain accurate and complete records and understand and carry out instructions received in writing or verbally.  
  • Ability to maintain regular, reliable, prompt and predictable on-site job attendance.  
  • Ability to work allocated hours which may include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. 
  • Ability to lawfully operate designated equipment/vehicles at all times duties are performed.   
  • Ability to think quickly, maintain self-control, and adapt to stressful situations.  
  • Knowledge of computer software including word processing, spreadsheet and database applications consistent for this position.  
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations required of this position.  
  • Ability to perform detailed work accurately and independently in compliance with stringent time limits with minimal direction and supervision.  
  • Ability to understand and effectively carry out verbal and written instructions.  
  • Ability to apply sound judgment and discretion in performing duties, resolving problems and interpreting policies and regulations.  
  • Ability to communicate detailed and often sensitive information effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing.  
  • Ability to handle sensitive interpersonal situations calmly and tactfully.  
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with individuals within and outside the organization.  
  • Ability to work the allocated hours of the position and respond after hours as needed.  

Salary : $56,451 - $66,123
