We have an exciting opportunity for a Space Environment Engineer to join the team with Barrios Technologies, a teammate company.

Responsibilities

The Space Environment Engineer  will:

  • Provide support as a space environments engineer for multiple NASA programs including Gateway and Axiom Station
  • Provide systems engineering support with space environments requirements and verification activities, working in concert with NASA civil servants and designated contractors
  • Evaluate induced environmental hazards between space station elements and visiting vehiclesConduct systems engineering trade studies in the form of modeling/analysis activities to identify potential contamination risks and mitigations strategies
  • Develop and update semi-empirical and theoretical models
  • Analyze/model molecular contamination and transport of contaminants from contamination sources (such as materials outgassing, vacuum venting, and chemical thruster plumes) onto external surfaces
  • Analyze/model plasma effects and spacecraft charging
  • Analyze/model radiation transport and effects to materials
  • Assess compatibility of spacecraft hardware with natural and induced space environment
  • Perform other duties as required

 

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

  • Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in Engineering and a minimum of 2-5 years of experience in the field or in arelated area
  • 3 or more years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g.,M.S. or Ph.D.)
  • Experience with CAD and 3D modeling software (Creo, SolidWorks, etc.)
  • Experience with meshing and/or finite element analysis software (Femap, NX Advanced Simulation, Ansys, Thermal Desktop, HyperWorks, etc.)
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience in Computer Programing
  • Strong analytical and computational skills (CFD and thermal analysis skills/experience are transferable)
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary field
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills

 

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering (Aerospace, Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Nuclear), Physics orChemistry M.S. or Ph.D. in Engineering
  • 5 or more years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g., M.S. or Ph.D.)
  • GPA 3.0 or higher
  • Experience with coding in Fortran, Python, C , or MATLAB
  • Experience with hydrocode (LS Dyna)
  • Experience with Linux operating system and high-performance computing (HPC) clusters
  • Knowledge of natural and induced Space Environments (Cislunar - Near Rectilinear Halo Orbit (NRHO), Low Earth Orbit (LEO), Geostationary Orbit (GEO), and High Earth Orbit (HEO))
  • Knowledge of GCR, solar wind/ plasma, CMEs/SEPs, solar irradiance, micrometeoroid, and cislunar gravity models and definitions
  • Experience with developing software to implement analytical models
  • Experience with materials outgassing, molecular transport, thin film deposition, optical property degradation, molecular gas dynamics, and/or multi-phase flows
  • Experience with hypergolic and Hall Effect thrusters' operation as well as associated plume characteristicsExperience with plasma charging analyses, ionizing radiation analyses, and/or related tools (NASCAP, SPIS, IRI, AE9/AP9, CREME96, SHIELDOSE, ESP/PHYCHIC, SPENVIS, MCNP, etc.)
  • Experience with external contamination/molecular deposition analysis codes and/or tools (e.g., Tecplot, NX, HyperWorks, Para View, MATLAB, LS Dyna, etc.) 
  • Experience with the Gateway Program, other NASA programs, and/or other space projects
  • Experience with the LINUX operating system

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and successfully complete a U.S. government background investigation

  • Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical
  • Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required
  • Must be able to work in a team atmosphere
  • Must put forward a professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation
  • Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others
  • This position may require some commuting and traveling to other installations as needed
