JOB TITLE: GROUP FITNESS INSTRUCTOR SUB – RECREATION DEPARTMENT
CLASSIFICATION: PART-TIME, Non-Exempt
SUPERVISOR: HEALTH & FITNESS MANAGER
HOURS: MONDAY – SATURDAY, REGULARLY SCHEDULED CLASSES 5:15 AM – 6:30 PM
PAY RANGE: $20.00 - $27.00/hour
POSITION SUMMARY: This position is for a Group Fitness Instructor who can teach a variety of musically driven, resistance, cardio and/or dance fitness classes including pre-choreographed and/or freestyle formats. Subbing opportunities to be taught on a regular or sub basis may include one or more of the following formats: SilverSneakers®, Cycle, Barre, Yoga, Zumba®, Aqua Fitness, PiYo®, Turbo Kick and general fitness resistance/cardio interval classes. The position of Group Fitness Instructor is a part-time position under the direct supervision of the Health & Fitness Manager. The Group Fitness Instructor is responsible for creating fitness classes and implementing the proper format, demonstrating and reinforcing proper form while using energetic, positive and motivating techniques.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Develop and implement the proper format for the type of aerobic/fitness class being taught, for example, choreography, and applicable music such as 32-count
- Assist with development of marketing strategies, promotional materials, prepare and review brochure copy for fitness programs
- Provide leadership and guidance to participants regarding proper form and skill
- Report to class 15 minutes early to prepare/review rosters, set up and/ or music
- Stay after class for up to 15 minutes to engage with participants and to clean up
- Teach all classes to the ability level of the participants
- Maintain a professional manner through proper attire, attitude and aptitude
- Communicate with the participants, fitness desk and manager regarding any changes for the class
- Instructors are required to locate and maintain a sub approved by the manager
- Immediately report any problems or repairs of equipment to the Health & Fitness Manager
- Request supplies as needed for class with adequate allowance for timely delivery
- Accurately track attendance of all participants
- Maintain a working knowledge of all general and department safety rules
- Enforce safety rules and improve public and employee knowledge by preventing, confronting and correcting unsafe behavior
- Be prepared to perform CPR/AED or First Aid if required
- Follow all procedures and guidelines as presented in the policy manual
- Wear proper uniform while teaching
- Attend staff training and risk management sessions
SAFETY AND RISK MANAGEMENT:
- Uphold safety and risk management strategies in support of and compliance with Park District policies, procedures, ordinances and practices
- Familiarity with and effective implementation of the Employee Safety Manual, Emergency Response Plan, and Crisis Management Plan
- Utilize the provided equipment to assist in injury prevention and damage to personal property
- Attend professional educational and safety trainings
- Assist with emergency procedures and building evaluation
- Utilize Personal Protective Equipment when performing duties, based on job tasks
- Correct unsafe conditions and/or report them to supervisor
- Promptly report hazardous conditions, accidents and injuries to supervisor
- Complete incident/accident report forms and promptly forward them to supervisor
- Perform any other duties, as assigned by Health & Fitness Manager
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Regularly required to talk, hear or read
- Frequently required to stand; walk; sit and use hands to assist and demonstrate
- Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, or crawl
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds; and over 30 pounds with assistance
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception

PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS:
- May be exposed to chemicals and cleaning materials
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS:
- Indoor environmental conditions will include lighting, temperature and loud music

- Must be able to respond to and handle behaviors in a positive appropriate manner
- Must be able to resolve problems, handle conflicts and make effective decisions under pressure
EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- High School Diploma required
- Current certification as a Group Fitness Instructor through ACE, AFAA or other nationally accredited organization
- Must have and maintain current certification in Red Cross CPR, AED, and First Aid within 3 months of hire
- A minimum of 2 years’ experience as an Aerobic/ Group Fitness Instructor, Personal Trainer, or in a related field preferred
