.5 MTSS Specialist
POSITION OVERVIEW
The MTSS Specialist provides school-based leadership for the implementation and continuous improvement of the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework. This role works collaboratively with the principal, teachers, parents/guardians, and the district MTSS Coordinator and Support Specialist to ensure all students receive the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional supports needed for success.
PRIMARY PURPOSE
To lead, coordinate, and support the effective implementation of the district’s MTSS framework by promoting data-driven decision-making, high-quality instruction, and equitable outcomes for all students.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- MTSS Leadership:
Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of the school’s MTSS process in alignment with district expectations and research-based practices. - Collaboration:
Work closely with the principal, teachers, support staff, and district MTSS Coordinator and Support Specialist to ensure fidelity of MTSS implementation and build staff capacity. - Data Collection, Organization & Decision-Making:
Facilitate the collection, analysis, and use of academic and behavioral data to identify student needs, monitor progress, and guide instructional and intervention decisions. - Instructional Support:
Support teachers in the use of evidence-based instructional strategies and interventions across Tier I, Tier II, and Tier III. - Professional Learning:
Plan and deliver professional development and facilitate data meetings to strengthen staff understanding and implementation of MTSS practices. - Systems & Processes:
Develop and maintain school-level systems for universal screening, progress monitoring, intervention implementation, and documentation. - Problem-Solving Facilitation:
Lead and support grade-level and school-based problem-solving teams to address student needs and remove barriers to learning. - Communication:
Maintain clear and consistent communication with staff, families, and the district MTSS Coordinator and Support Specialist regarding student supports, data, and MTSS processes. - Continuous Improvement:
Monitor the effectiveness of MTSS implementation and use data and feedback to refine systems and improve student outcomes.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Valid teaching license and current state certification
- Minimum of 3–5 years of successful teaching experience
- Demonstrated experience with MTSS, RtI, PBIS, or similar frameworks
- Strong knowledge of academic, behavioral, and social-emotional practices
- Proven ability to analyze and use data to inform instruction and interventions
- Strong coaching, collaboration, and communication skills
- Experience leading professional learning and facilitating teams preferred
- Knowledge of special education, Section 504, and related support systems preferred
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position is based within the school setting. Occasional meetings, training, and events outside of regular school hours may be required.
