POSITION: Reading Specialist

JOB GOAL: To help provide the kind of instruction and learning environment that will
enable each student to master the reading skills appropriate to age, grade level and
individual capacity.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Massachusetts Certification in Reading preferred
2. Approximately 5 years of classroom teaching appropriate to level of
position.
3. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Committee
may find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO: Principal

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Meet the performance responsibility expectations of classroom teachers at
appropriate grade levels.
Specialized Teaching Skills
1. Administer diagnostic tests and evaluate reading skills of new students
and others referred by staff.
2. Analyze school reading test scores.
3. Work with classroom teachers and children in the school reading
program.
4. Provides direct consultive help and training to staff.
5. Outside the regular classroom, teaches individuals and small groups of
children not able to succeed in the regular classroom reading program.
6. Prepare and conduct in-service programs on reading.
7. Orient new teachers to reading program of the school and assist as
necessary.
8. Assist staff in selecting and evaluating materials for reading.
9. Provide suggestions for enrichment programs in reading for
gifted/talented children.
10. Meet with parents to discuss the school’s reading program.
11. Keep abreast of new developments in reading techniques, materials,
and evaluation and inform staff.
12. Attend appropriate reading workshops and conventions.
13. Orient substitute teachers to school’s reading program and assist as
necessary.

14. Such other duties as assigned by Principal.
