Barnesville Public School is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Director of Buildings and Grounds to lead the district's facilities, maintenance, and operations team. This full-time administrative position plays a key leadership role in ensuring safe, clean, efficient, and well-maintained school buildings and grounds that support high-quality learning environments for students and staff.
About the Position
The Director of Buildings and Grounds is responsible for planning, managing, and directing all cleaning, maintenance, repair, safety, and security operations across the district's facilities. This position supervises custodial and maintenance staff, oversees the physical plant and mechanical systems, manages department budgets, and coordinates capital improvement planning.
This role is hands-on—ideal for a leader who is willing to actively assist staff, including helping with snow removal, grounds work, and larger maintenance tasks when needed.
This position reports directly to the Superintendent.
Key ResponsibilitiesLeadership & Supervision (35%)
- Supervise custodial and maintenance staff, establish work schedules, and assign duties.
- Develop performance expectations, procedures, and training programs.
- Conduct staff evaluations and support internal promotions and assignments.
- Assist staff directly during absences, larger projects, or weather-related needs.
- Actively participate in snow removal and groundskeeping tasks.
Facilities, Buildings & Grounds Management (20%)
- Oversee operation and maintenance of all district buildings, systems, grounds, and equipment.
- Determine maintenance needs and assign staff or coordinate contracted services.
- Monitor and maintain security systems and procedures.
- Ensure proper operation of boilers, HVAC systems, and related mechanical systems.
- Coordinate with transportation staff to schedule vehicle maintenance and ensure DOT compliance.
- Support administrators, staff, and the public in facility use and scheduling.
Budget & Purchasing Oversight (10%)
- Manage the department budget, energy consumption, and maintenance contracts.
- Purchase supplies, equipment, boiler chemicals, and parts.
- Process requisitions and invoices and recommend annual budget priorities.
Staffing & Hiring (10%)
- Coordinate the hiring process for maintenance and custodial positions.
- Participate in screening, interviewing, and recommending candidates.
- Recommend internal staffing assignments in alignment with union agreements.
Capital Planning & Construction Coordination (10%)
- Recommend priorities for capital improvement and equipment replacement.
- Work with architects, construction managers, contractors, and administrators on remodeling and major projects.
- Oversee bidding processes and project scheduling.
District Leadership & Support (10%)
- Support district-wide initiatives and the direction of the Superintendent.
- Participate in committees, task forces, and professional development.
Health, Safety & Compliance (5%)
- Oversee district compliance with EPA, OSHA, AHERA, and other regulatory requirements.
- Conduct health and safety inspections (e.g., fire extinguishers, eyewash stations, exit lights, playground equipment).
- Coordinate necessary repairs and documentation.
QualificationsPreferred but Not Required Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Successful experience in buildings and grounds/facility management.
- Supervisory experience.
- Experience in a school setting.
Required Licensure
- Minnesota 1st Class C Boiler/Engineer License.
- Valid Minnesota driver's license.
- Facilities Director Certification preferred.
Technical Skills
- Training/experience in electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC pneumatic & digital control systems.
- Ability to operate a wide range of maintenance and grounds equipment (e.g., snowplows, loaders, mowers, lifts).
- Strong organizational, communication, and human relations skills.
Working Conditions
- Exposure to temperatures as high as 90 degrees may be encountered (boiler rooms and outdoor environments), dust, chemicals, heights, confined spaces, and mechanical equipment.
- On-call responsibilities for emergencies and after-hours needs.
- Physical demands include walking between buildings, climbing, lifting up to 50 pounds, and pushing/pulling equipment.
