Barnes, Inc. is looking for an experienced Full-Charge Bookkeeper to join our team. This is a key accounting position responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, completing reconciliations and month-end activities, supporting financial reporting, and helping ensure the integrity of our day-to-day accounting operations.

We are looking for someone who enjoys taking ownership of their work, pays close attention to detail, can independently research and resolve discrepancies, and understands when an accounting or tax matter should be elevated to leadership or our outside CPA.

As an employee-owned company, every employee contributes to our success. This position plays an important role in protecting company resources and maintaining the accurate financial information our team relies on to make sound business decisions.

What You'll Do

  • Maintain the general ledger and supporting accounting records.
  • Prepare routine journal entries and assist with month-end close.
  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, accounts receivable, inventory, payroll liabilities, benefit-related accounts, fixed assets, prepaid expenses, accrued expenses, and other balance sheet accounts.
  • Process accounts payable, vendor payments, W-9 documentation, vendor reconciliations, and year-end 1099 support.
  • Research and resolve accounting discrepancies and reconciling items.
  • Prepare financial reports, schedules, and account information for management.
  • Prepare and electronically file monthly Wisconsin sales and use tax returns, including applicable use tax adjustments and reconciliations.
  • Maintain fixed asset schedules and supporting records for purchases and disposals.
  • Assist with ESOP-related accounting and administrative activities, including annual valuation support, participant allocations and distributions, compliance requirements, and related accounting schedules and entries.
  • Provide accounting support for payroll-related reconciliations and serve as a trained backup to Human Resources for biweekly payroll processing when needed.
  • Prepare reconciliations and supporting schedules for our outside CPA and assist with year-end financial and tax information requests.
  • Support fleet and equipment administration by maintaining registrations, titles, renewals, insurance documentation, and applicable compliance records.
  • Maintain organized accounting records, documentation, and procedures while helping identify opportunities to improve efficiency and internal controls.

What We're Looking For

Required:

  • 3 years of progressively responsible bookkeeping or accounting experience.
  • Experience with general ledger accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, journal entries, account reconciliations, and month-end close.
  • Working knowledge of QuickBooks.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Ability to run reports, retrieve financial information, and make basic adjustments within accounting and reporting systems.
  • Strong understanding of fundamental accounting principles.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize responsibilities, and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Ability to handle confidential financial and employee information with discretion.

Preferred:

  • Associate's degree in accounting, finance, business, or a related field.
  • 3–5 years of full-charge bookkeeping experience.
  • Experience preparing Wisconsin sales and use tax returns and use tax adjustments.
  • Experience with payroll accounting, fixed assets, job costing, and outside CPA coordination.
  • Experience with additional accounting systems such as Sage, NetSuite, SAP, or similar software.
  • Experience in landscaping, construction, contracting, service, or another seasonal business.

A bachelor's degree, CPA designation, or MBA is not required. An equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant accounting experience will be considered.
