What are the responsibilities and job description for the Family Law Attorney position at Barnds Law Firm?
About Us
At Barnds Law LLC, we are dedicated to securing positive outcomes for our clients and their families. While our practice spans criminal defense, employment, and real estate law, our primary focus and heart lie in Family Law. We are expanding our Overland Park office and looking for a brilliant, highly motivated, and compassionate attorney to join our team as a core domestic litigator.
About the Role
We are looking for someone who loves the practice of law and wants to grow alongside a supportive firm where hard work is genuinely recognized and rewarded.
In this role, an active Kansas Bar License is an absolute MUST-HAVE—we cannot consider applicants without it. Dual licensure in Missouri is a definite bonus, but Kansas qualification is non-negotiable. Ideally, you bring at least four to five years of hands-on family law experience, a sharp legal mind, and the confidence to manage cases independently from start to finish.
On a day-to-day basis, you will handle all aspects of your assigned caseload through a variety of responsibilities:
- Drafting legal documents, correspondence, pleadings, motions, judgments, and orders.
- Communicating and corresponding regularly with opposing counsel, court personnel, and clients.
- Conducting thorough legal research and managing discovery.
- Interviewing and preparing witnesses for court testimony.
- Appearing promptly in court, via Zoom, or via Bluejeans for all scheduled hearings.
- Performing administrative tasks such as filing, mailing, and organizing case files.
- Collaborating respectfully and professionally with support staff.
- Logging daily hours accurately using billing software like Clio.
- Maintaining client accounts, monitoring billings, and handling inactive accounts properly.
- Managing and adhering to strict court deadlines, including discovery timelines and journal entries.
- Maintaining professional civility and a positive attitude at all times.
Who You Are
- Licensed & Experienced: You hold a J.D., an active Kansas Bar license (required), and strong experience navigating domestic relations cases.
- A Skilled Communicator: You approach clients with candor and kindness, maintain professional civility under pressure, and collaborate seamlessly with our support staff.
- Self-Motivated & Driven: You thrive in an environment where you can take full ownership of your work without being micromanaged. You are dependable, detail-oriented, and brought to life by solving complex challenges.
- Tech-Savvy & Adaptable: You are comfortable using practice management software, virtual courtroom platforms, and digital file systems.
What We Offer
- Competitive Salary: $90,000 – $150,000/year, aligned with experience.
- Performance Bonuses: Structure discussed at the time of an offer.
- Comprehensive Benefits: Health insurance with HSA options, dental, and vision coverage.
- Retirement Planning: 401(k) with company matching.
- Work-Life Support: Paid time off, parental leave, and flexible scheduling options.
- Growth: Professional development assistance to support your continuing legal education.
