Position Summary

The Episcopal Student Center at Sam Houston State University is seeking a dependable, welcoming, and organized part-time intern to support the Center’s ministry, programs, hospitality, communications, and daily operations.

The intern will work closely with the Campus Missioner, student officers, Episcopal Student Center vestry, volunteers, and members of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. This position is intended for someone who enjoys working with college students, helping build community, and supporting a Christian ministry that welcomes people from a variety of backgrounds.

The ideal candidate will be responsible, self-motivated, comfortable communicating with students, and willing to assist with both ministry programs and practical tasks around the Student Center.

Position Details

  • Position: Episcopal Student Center Intern
  • Employment Status: Part-time
  • Hours: Up to 20 hours per week
  • Pay: $11 per hour
  • Location: Episcopal Student Center at Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas
  • Supervisor: Campus Missioner
  • Schedule: A flexible schedule will be developed in consultation with the Campus Missioner. Some evening and occasional weekend hours may be required because of student programs and special events.

Primary ResponsibilitiesStudent Hospitality And Community

  • Help create a welcoming, safe, and inclusive environment for students and visitors.
  • Greet students and help them become familiar with the Episcopal Student Center and its programs.
  • Assist with regular student gatherings, meals, worship services, Bible studies, and community-building activities.
  • Help students connect with the Campus Missioner, student officers, and other appropriate resources.
  • Encourage student participation while respecting each student’s personal boundaries, beliefs, and privacy.
  • Help prepare meeting spaces before programs and restore them afterward.

Programs and Events

  • Assist with planning and carrying out weekly programs, special events, retreats, outreach activities, and service projects.
  • Help coordinate meals, supplies, room arrangements, sign-in materials, and other event needs.
  • Assist student officers in communicating program information and completing assigned responsibilities.
  • Help maintain a calendar of Episcopal Student Center programs and important campus events.
  • Attend selected student programs, meetings, or events as directed by the Campus Missioner.

Communications and Outreach

  • Assist with social media posts, flyers, email announcements, website updates, and other promotional materials.
  • Help publicize Episcopal Student Center events on campus and through appropriate online platforms.
  • Take photographs at approved events when requested and when appropriate permission has been given.
  • Help maintain accurate contact lists and communication records.
  • Respond to routine questions or direct inquiries to the Campus Missioner when pastoral, confidential, or administrative attention is needed.

Office and Administrative Support

  • Assist with basic office duties, including filing, copying, organizing documents, preparing materials, and maintaining records.
  • Help track program attendance, volunteer participation, purchases, receipts, and ministry-related information.
  • Assist with updating forms, calendars, contact lists, inventories, and other ministry documents.
  • Help organize supplies and notify the Campus Missioner when materials need to be ordered or replaced.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding students, pastoral matters, financial information, and other sensitive ministry information.

Building and Hospitality Support

  • Help maintain an orderly, clean, and welcoming Student Center.
  • Assist with light cleaning and organization related to programs and daily use.
  • Help monitor supplies in the kitchen, chapel, meeting spaces, and offices.
  • Report maintenance, safety, security, or building concerns promptly to the Campus Missioner.
  • Follow all Episcopal Student Center policies concerning access, guests, alcohol, overnight use, building security, and appropriate conduct.

Qualifications

Applicants should:

  • Be dependable, punctual, and able to follow through on assigned responsibilities.
  • Communicate respectfully and effectively with students, clergy, church members, volunteers, and visitors.
  • Be able to work independently while also functioning well as part of a team.
  • Be organized and able to manage several responsibilities at once.
  • Demonstrate good judgment, appropriate boundaries, and respect for confidentiality.
  • Be comfortable working with people from diverse cultural, religious, racial, social, and personal backgrounds.
  • Have basic computer and communication skills, including familiarity with email, shared documents, calendars, social media, or a willingness to learn.
  • Be willing to work some evenings and occasional weekends.
  • Be willing to complete required background checks and safeguarding training.

Experience in campus ministry, church ministry, nonprofit work, hospitality, communications, event planning, or student leadership is helpful but not required.

Physical and Practical Requirements

The Position May Occasionally Require The Intern To

  • Set up tables, chairs, food, and program supplies.
  • Carry light boxes or supplies.
  • Move throughout the Student Center and campus.
  • Work indoors and outdoors during events.
  • Maintain a reliable method of communication with the Campus Missioner.

Ministry Expectations

The Episcopal Student Center is a ministry of welcome, hospitality, Christian formation, worship, service, and community. The intern is not required to be Episcopalian but must respect the identity, worship, values, policies, and mission of the Episcopal Church and the Episcopal Student Center.

The intern must maintain appropriate professional and pastoral boundaries with students. Personal information learned through the position must be kept confidential unless disclosure is required because of safety, safeguarding, or legal concerns.

The intern is expected to refer pastoral emergencies, mental-health concerns, safeguarding matters, conflicts, and other serious situations to the Campus Missioner rather than attempting to manage them alone.
