Position Summary:
Under general direction of the Design Engineering Manager, designs and directs the installation of effective mechanical and electromechanical components and systems; provides successful design solutions that meet customers’ specifications.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned to meet business needs.
· Develops successful engineering design concepts and solutions that meet customer specifications, engineering standards, codes, regulations and Company quality standards, and carries concepts through to detail designs.
· Controls expenditures within limitations of project budget; determines and implements approved means for reducing project costs.
· Working from customer design specifications, produces preliminary sketches, layouts and assemblies; uses computer assisted design/drafting equipment and software to develop designs.
· Produces design calculations of all equipment, components and material.
· Performs FEA and manual analysis to assess component material selection, geometric dimensions and tolerances and to demonstrate compliance with thermal, weight and structural requirements.
· Models and analyzes the technical aspects of designs to ensure design effectiveness.
· Manages the development of approved designs and coordinates activities with all other project disciplines.
· Evaluates and approves design changes, specifications and drawing release.
· Prepares interim and completion project reports.
· Prepares engineering packages for submittal to clients and regulatory agencies.
· Occasionally involved in testing and commissioning of mechanical, hydraulic and electrical equipment. This includes the ability and aptitude to learn how Bardex equipment works, diagnose problems and find solutions.
· Attends design review meetings; assists in presentations and discussions of the operation, design and testing of Bardex products with customers, sub-contractors, suppliers and others.
· Performs detailed studies of Requests for Proposal and all-inclusive specifications; prepares technical proposals; ensures that concepts of components, assemblies and systems can be manufactured to meet customers’ needs.
· Proposes design improvements, new concepts and new ideas to improve Bardex products and make them more competitive.
· Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality internal and external customer service.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Incumbents in this job may mentor and provide work direction, training and assistance to junior department staff and interns, but do not have supervisory responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited college or university; or a combination of education, training and experience sufficient to demonstrate the ability to satisfactorily perform the essential functions of the job.
Training and Experience:
3 or more years of successful experience as a design engineer involving mechanical design and manufacture of heavy machinery or equipment, preferably including hydraulic equipment.
Knowledge of:
Design techniques, tools and principles involved in the production of technical models, working layouts and detailed drawings; the theories and application of mechanical engineering principles, techniques, procedures, equipment and technology; principles of stress analysis, materials, hydraulics, industrial electrical and electronic circuits and heat transfer; welded and bolted connections; ANSI Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing standards; arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, and their applications; raw materials, production processes, quality, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective design for manufacture of products; knowledge of machines and tools; document change practices and procedures; document control systems; office practices and procedures; telephone etiquette; English grammar; standard filing systems; CAD 2D and 3D design tools and mathematical computation software; standard software applications to prepare spreadsheets, reports, statistical data and correspondence.
Skills and Ability to:
Read, comprehend and interpret specifications, sketches, models and verbal instructions to prepare successful design concepts; produce designs that conform to customer specifications; perform basic analyses; apply general rules to specific problems leading to successful designs; demonstrate proficiency in computer aided CAD 2- and 3D design programs; understand and apply gripper and cylinder analysis programs and the basic principles of hydraulics and stress analysis; apply general rules to specific problems to produce successful models; think creatively to develop new design ideas; evaluate the feasibility of designs; keep up-to-date technically and apply new knowledge to the job; learn and understand the requirements of codes, regulations and specifications applicable to Bardex products (ASIC, JIC, ASME, ANSI, ASTM, ABS, DNV, etc.); gather and analyze information; exercise tact and diplomacy to resolve problems; communicate effectively in English in oral and written form; use computer assisted design equipment and software to perform arithmetic, algebraic and geometric calculations rapidly and accurately; work independently with little or no supervision; exercise sound judgment; establish priorities and meet deadlines; manage time efficiently; work cooperatively and effectively with those contacted during the course of work; operate standard office equipment, including a PC; operate standard software applications.
Other Characteristics
Possesses and maintains a valid passport; ability and willingness to travel within the US and internationally and to be away from home for several weeks at a time.
Working Conditions:
Environment: Office environment; frequent interruptions. May include visits to offshore oil & gas platforms, vessels, shipyards, manufacturing plants and construction sites with proximity to machinery having moving parts. May include exposure to extreme weather conditions, noise, chemicals, fumes, odors and gasses. Conditions will vary at each location. When working in the field at customer sites, appropriate safety training and safety equipment will be provided by Bardex and/or the customer as required.
Physical Abilities Required: Ability to hear and speak to exchange information in person and on the telephone; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and standard office equipment; ability to see to read a variety of materials; ability to bend at the waist, kneel or crouch to store or retrieve materials; ability to sit and maintain mental concentration for extended periods of time.
Salary : $95,000 - $115,000
