Job Title: Manager, Design Process and Tool Shop

FLSA Wage Category: Exempt

Reports To: President

Primary Job Duties

Under the direction of the President manages, coordinates, and directs all work activities

directly related to the design and development of new packaging projects and construction

and maintenance of new and existing production tooling.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Develop, establish, and implement long-range and short-term strategies and

operating plans to achieve goals and objectives.

2. Direct and coordinate work activities related to the design and development of

new packaging projects.

3. Design tooling to accommodate production machines used in our

manufacturing process including planning, directing and coordinating all inhouse

work and outside vendor services required for completing new tooling

projects.

4. Coordinate the repair and maintenance of existing tooling.

5. Clarify product specifications, design perimeters, prototype/sample needs and

production tooling requirements through Bardes Plastics sales representatives

or directly with customer engineers.

6. Utilize computer aided design software to perform applicable design and

prototype work and stay current with design software advancements.

7. Participate as a member of the company’s Product Design Team to analyze

new product designs, manufacturing capabilities, tooling needs and quality

control challenges.

8. Maintain liaison with estimating, sales, purchasing, and production

departments and when appropriate, conduct new product design meetings.

9. Perform the process for entering and printing job shop orders for prototype

and production tooling using MACOLA computer program and coordinate

purchasing needs by submitting purchase orders to the Purchasing Manager.

10. Plan and evaluate tooling department staffing needs, schedule machine

maintenance, and maintain shop supply inventories.

11. Comply and enforce all Company occupational and food safety policies and

work rules

Job Specifications and Requirements

1. Ability to manage day to day department operations through planing, organizing and

supervising subordinates work activities.

2. Apply creative thinking with the ability to use geometric shapes and mechanical

knowledge to create packaging concepts that represent the needs of the customer.

3. Ability to read and interpret drawings, blueprints and customer specifications.

4. Knowledgeable with computer aided design software and CNC programming software

used in the tooling department.

5. Knowledgeable with machining practices, machine cutter selection, machining fixtures

and the ability to operate various manual and CNC tool room machines.

6. Ability to apply mathematical concepts such as basic match, geometry, and

trigonometry.

7. Ability to use and interpret micrometers, calipers, and other measuring tools used in

product design and tool making.

Physical Demands

employee to successfully perform this job’s essential functions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and

fingers, handle or touch objects, tools, or controls. This job requires frequent sitting,

standing, and walking. The employee must occasional lift and or move up to 50 pounds.
