Quick Care Provider (PA or NP)

Job Description: The Advanced Practice Provider will undertake direct clinical management of patients, including history taking, systemic physical assessment, diagnosis, formulation of clinical management plan and prescribing appropriate treatment, in accordance with federal, state, and organizational guidelines.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Medical Responsibilities

• Screen patients to determine the need for medical attention.
• Review patient records to determine health status.
• Take a patient history.
• Perform a physical examination.
• Perform development screening examinations on children.
• Record pertinent patient data.
• Make decisions regarding data gathering and appropriate management and treatment of patients being seen for the initial evaluation of a problem or the follow-up evaluation of a previously diagnosed condition.
• Prepare patient summaries.
• Initiate requests for appropriate laboratory tests, radiological studies, and other diagnostic procedures.
• Write prescriptions as permitted by West Virginia Code and regulations.
• Perform house calls and assisted living patient evaluation and treatment as required.
• Write hospital and nursing home patient evaluation and treatment.
• Take after-hours call.
• Make appropriate referrals to such ancillary services as social services, behavioral health services, and physical therapy.
• Request necessary medical consultations from specialty physicians.
• Start intravenous solutions if required.
• Conduct patient education classes in diabetes control, smoking cessation, weight loss, exercise, and other health related areas.
• Pronounce death in accordance with governing board.
• Collect, or provide orders for nursing staff to collect, specimens for and carry out performed blood, urine and stool analyses and cultures.
• Identify normal and abnormal findings in history, physical examination, and laboratory studies.
• Initiate appropriate evaluation and emergency management for emergency situations, for example, cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, injuries, burns and hemorrhage.
• Institute lifesaving measures such as passing an endotracheal airway, external cardiac massage, external cardiac defibrillation, and injection of IV medications.
• Perform clinical procedures such as Venipuncture, Electrocardiogram, Care and suturing of minor lacerations, Casting and splinting, Control of external hemorrhage, Application of dressings and bandages, Removal of superficial foreign bodies, Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (Basic life support) until arrival of emergency medical services, Audiometry screening, Visual screening, Punch or shave biopsy for those with specialized training and board approval, Cervical and Endometrial biopsy for those with specialized training, Pessary insertion and care for those with specialized training, Incision and drainage of superficial abscesses and infected sebaceous cysts for those with specialized training and governing board approval, Excisions for those with specialized training and governing board approval, Cryotherapy or simple wart removal for those with specialized training and governing board approval, Carry out aseptic and isolation techniques, Toenail excision
• Provide counseling and instruction regarding patient problems
• Lead individual patient care teams within the medical practice
• Execute documents and maintain accurate patient medical records
• Prepare patient discharge summaries
• Assist in clinical procedures
• Render Well-Woman care including, screening, evaluation, immunizations on preventative care, prenatal management, family planning, fertility, and urogynecology, as well as care for episodic or chronic illnesses and sexually transmitted diseases.
• Complete program training with emphasis on specialty areas according to organizational need.
• Collaborate with physicians and peers in a manner by which to learn and become proficient in new procedures.

General and Administrative Functions

• Complete documentation of patient interactions and billing for the interaction in a timely manner according to BCHA policy, no later than 7 calendar days after the interaction.
• View messages and tasks from staff to ensure patients have been responded to in an efficient and correct manner.
• Maintain certification, licensure, and logins required for participation in organizational credentialing and privileging, and access to required databases and software. (Includes federal DOT Medical Examiner certification for CDL physicals.)
• Participate in organizational quality improvement programs.
• Participate in the development of innovative programs and ideas to further the mission and vision of BCHA.
• Demonstrate an understanding of BCHA’s mission and vision in performing all aspects of the position.
• Demonstrate a caring and helpful attitude when interacting with patients, vendors, and fellow employees. Strive to build cooperative partnerships with internal and external customers.
• Participate in other program activities as appropriate.
• Attend and participate in organizational meetings.
• Perform other duties as directed by the CMO or CEO.

Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

• Education at a master’s or doctorate level commensurate with licensing requirements for Physician’s Assistant, Nurse Practitioner, or Doctor of Nursing Practice
• Participate in continuing education to maintain licensure in good standing with the appropriate licensing board.
• CPR - BLS is required to be maintained.
• Computer literacy required, with experience in electronic health record and other programs preferred.

Travel Requirements: Some travel to individual BCHA locations may be required.

Salary Range: Based on levels of experience and educational training.

Work Hours: Hours of operation for primary care health services (typically, 40 hours/week).
