The Office of the State’s Attorney for Baltimore City is seeking a Paralegal for the Economic Crimes/Older and Disabled Person’s Unit to provide support services to attorneys who conduct financial crimes investigations and prosecute the accused offenders in the Baltimore City Circuit Court. The position will be located at 120 East Baltimore Street in Baltimore, Maryland. This position is an at-will position and is not subject to civil service rules.

 

The paralegal provides critical support to all attorneys in the division. This position must at all times be fluid and flexible in light of staffing issues, and to allow for changing responsibilities as technological and legal changes occur.

 

Education: An associate’s degree in paralegal studies from an accredited college or university is preferred. Three years of experience performing paralegal work in the criminal justice field may be substituted for the education requirement.

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

·       Assist prosecutors in obtaining evidence, including researching and identifying the custodian of records for financial institutions, corporations, nonprofit agencies and other institutions to acquire financial records through the grand jury subpoena process.

·       Draft subpoenas to obtain evidence such as financial records from banking institutions, insurance companies, PayPal, CashApp, Venmo and other payment systems, medical records, cellular phone records, etc.

·       Bates Stamp and redact high volume sets of financial data using Nitro Pro.

·       Type indictments and other pleadings.

·       Answer phone inquiries using the division’s database for complaints and requests for assistance. 

·       Assist prosecutors with organizing evidence for trial such as redacting, financial records, redacting body worn camera footage, preparing summary excel spreadsheets to be used as exhibits,  general file management of all ECU/ODPU files (electronic as well as physical files)

·       Assist prosecutors with initial drafts of motions and filing motions.

·       Maintain office intake and conviction data for fiscal reporting

Qualifications:

·       Experience working for or collaborating with financial institutions.

·       Familiarity with finance and audit terms as well as banking industry standards and practices.

·       Exceptional organizational skills with a proven ability in document management to ensure the efficient flow of information within the division and the State’s Attorney’s Office.

·       Demonstrated capacity to multitask, prioritize competing tasks effectively, and consistently meet deadlines under pressure.

·       Proactive approach to problem-solving, with a keen ability to identify next steps and take initiative, coupled with confidence in troubleshooting unexpected challenges.

·       Upholds a high standard of professional and ethical conduct, displaying unwavering integrity and discretion in handling sensitive information.

·       Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, enabling effective collaboration with colleagues, stakeholders, and individuals involved in the investigation and prosecution process.

·       Must be comfortable in engaging with older adults who may have been victims of elder abuse

·       Exhibits a positive, can-do attitude, fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment within the team.

·       Proficiency in MS Office applications, including Word, Excel, etc., with the ability to utilize these tools efficiently to support attorneys in their duties.

·       Must give attention to detail and ability to respond to requests correctly and accurately; ability to take direction and complete tasks with little or no supervision

Compensation: The salary for this position is $62,095 - $81,021. per year. This position includes paid time off and Baltimore City Health Benefits.
