What are the responsibilities and job description for the 2026 Summer School-Summer Attendance Liaisons position at Baltimore City Public Schools?
The Summer Attendance Liaison (SAL) will conduct outreach (home visits, letters, phone calls, attendance meetings) to support a strong start to the 2026-2027 school year. Based at schools, SALs will work with chronically absent students and their families during the summer to identify and address attendance barriers such as enrollment, uniforms, scheduling, transportation, and supplies. They will build trusting, equitable relationships and help families navigate systems to improve school attendance practices . This work will be informed by current research, best practices, and district and school-level data, with a focus on nurturing student wholeness. SALs will collaborate closely with community partners and stakeholders within City Schools and beyond to ensure that students and families have the resources needed to improve attendance .

Essential Functions
- Identify students who are frequently absent and their families who could benefit from summer outreach.
- Reach out to students and families (home visits, letters, phone calls, attendance meetings) over the summer to understand their needs and support them.
- Connect students to citywide resources, events, and camps for engagement and re-engagement efforts
- Stay updated on trends and research about attendance and chronic absenteeism.
- Identify students who need targeted resources and support within schools.
- Plan and organize strategies to boost attendance at school and in the wider school community.
- Develop a strong understanding of current attendance initiatives and help share best practices throughout the district.
- Monitor truant students, initiate interventions and support, and take legal action in truancy court when needed. Build positive relationships with community groups, universities, and others interested in attendance issues.
- Create and oversee processes to make sure attendance rules for students with disabilities are followed.
- Carry out and support all activities in line with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies, following federal and state laws, school board rules, and professional standards.
- Maintains confidential and sensitive information.
- Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment and non-discrimination policies; follows federal laws, state laws, school board policies, administrative regulations, and professional standards.
- Open to current City Schools employees
- Open to 10-month employees in L44, CUB, and PSRP (BTU is not eligible for this non-instructional role)
- Non-exempt 10-month staff will be paid their current hourly rate, but can only have one summer assignment (no "double dipping")
- 12-month non-exempt employees (L44, CUB, and PSRP), and 12-month PSASA staff, can serve as SALs but cannot be paid an additional stipend.
- Employee of Baltimore City Public Schools for the 2025-2026 school year, with the intention to remain an employee for the 2026-2027 school year.
- Possession of all appropriate licenses, certificates, and contracts for the 2026-2027 school year (non-renewals, expiring certifications or licenses, separations, including retirees, will not be considered for summer school employment).
- Acceptable annual rating by school principal/administrator
