Job Overview
Balsam Mountain Preserve, a private golf community, is seeking a proactive and dedicated Assistant Barn Manager to join our established boarding and trail guide program. In this vital role, you will support the Equestrian Director in overall management and daily operations of the barn, ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of the animals while maintaining a well-organized and efficient facility. You will also be the primary lead for our seasonal trail ride program, with a focus on beginner riders and membership engagement. Your leadership will help foster a positive environment for both animals and staff, contributing to the success of our boarding and member outreach initiatives. This position offers an exciting opportunity to merge equine management and hospitality in a horse-centric, client satisfaction-oriented setting.
Housing
While on-site housing is not currently available, it is occupied by the Equestrian Director and is likely to become available long-term.
Horse Care Duties
- Assist in coordinating daily barn operations, including feeding schedules, turnout, and stall maintenance
- Participation in daily feed and care shifts
- Monitor horse health and report concerns to the Director or veterinary team promptly
- Support hiring, onboarding, and training of barn staff and seasonal employees
- Maintain inventory of feed, tack, and medical supplies; place orders as needed
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols for staff, riders, and horses
- Communicate with clients/riders regarding scheduling, expectations, and program updates
- Help organize and execute special events, clinics, and group rides
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of barn, tack rooms, and common areas
- Step into leadership role in the Director’s absence
Seasonal / Trail Program Responsibilities
- Oversee daily operations of the trail ride program during peak season
- Maintain program horse fitness to ensure safe and positive guest experiences
- Match horses appropriately to riders based on skill level and temperament
- Manage trail scheduling, bookings, and group flow
- Address customer concerns and ensure high-quality service standards
Requirements
- 2 years experience in equine care, barn management, or similar role
- Strong working knowledge of horse behavior, handling, and basic first aid
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks
- Ability to lift 50 lbs
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Comfortable handling multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Availability to work weekends, holidays, and seasonal extended hours
- Valid driver’s license (and ability to operate farm vehicles/equipment is a plus)
