Fleet Maintenance Specialist

Job Title: Fleet Maintenance Specialist 

Position Summary:
The Fleet Maintenance Specialist  plays a vital role in the safe and efficient operation of the school district's transportation fleet. This position is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and inspection of school buses and district vehicles, ensuring they meet all local, state, and federal safety standards. The mechanic will also be expected to drive student routes as needed and communicate effectively with bus drivers and the Transportation Director to support daily transportation operations.

Employment Status:
Full -Time, 12-Month Position
40 Hours per week

Primary Responsibilities:

• Maintain all district-owned equipment and develop plans for preventive maintenance.
• Determine maintenance needs of the district fleet of buses and equipment.
• Maintain safety standards in conformance with state and insurance regulations.
• Maintain equipment maintenance records and repair data.
• Maintain accurate financial records for parts and maintenance expenditures.
• Maintain a current inventory of supplies and equipment.
• Possess knowledge and application of state and federal transportation rules and guidelines.
• Promote high standards of safety and good housekeeping methods in all work-connected areas and for all of the school buses.
• Demonstrate organization and professionalism in fulfilling the responsibilities of the job.
• Develop recommendations for future equipment purchases.
• Serve as a bus driver, as needed
• Maintain high integrity and confidentiality in the school operation.
• Be knowledgeable of and abide by all school board policies, procedures, and other applicable laws.
• Cooperate with and work in a courteous manner with co-workers and other personnel.
• Dress appropriately for the position and work required.
• Demonstrate a positive attitude toward school, students, and job and communicate the same to the community.
• Accept constructive criticism and suggestions and seek to improve each performance responsibility.
• Demonstrate organization and professionalism in fulfilling the responsibilities of the job.
• Greet all students, faculty, staff, and visitors courteously
• Attend work on a prompt and regular basis.

Qualifications:

• Valid Iowa CDL license
• Have previous fleet experience and are familiar with diesel and gasoline systems.
• Diagnostic, Electrical, and AC skills.
• Knowledge of labor laws and regulations.
• ASE Certification is desirable but not required
• Ability to interpret technical, manuals, and service bulletins
• Strong organizational, communication and problem solving skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Must pass background check and drug screening per district and state regulations
   

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: 

• On-call availability may be required for emergency repairs or driving coverage
• Physical demands including lifting up to 50 lbs., standing, bending, and working in tight spaces
• Indoor and outdoor work in various weather conditions
• Exposure to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable.
• Exposure to diesel and automotive fumes
• Make driving decisions that greatly impact their passengers.
• Must keep control of the vehicle and keep pace with traffic.
• May be exposed to contaminants and the diseases and infections carried by school children.
• May be exposed to hazardous driving conditions.
• Work within several inches of passengers that require assistance boarding
