The Deputy Sheriff – Judicial Protection Services, provides safety and well-being of the general public, deters criminal activity within the courthouse, enforces all laws, statutes, codes, ordinances, and regulations, and performs a variety of general law enforcement functions consisting of patrol, court services, investigations, arrest, apprehension, supervision of offenders and special details or specific assignments within the assigned division. When assigned to Courthouse Security, this position assists with the day-to-day operations of all Baldwin County Courthouses, ensuring the Courthouses are secure. 

Successful applicants must pass a criminal background check and will be subject to a pre-employment drug screen.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The position may involve exposure to and require the officer to function in the presence of the following: inclement weather, to include extreme heat/cold, rain, ice, wind, etc.; light conditions associated with day and night; fire, smoke, chemical leaks/spills – as close proximity as necessary to provide emergency services; personal danger, including but not limited to armed and/or dangerous persons, and animals, persons and/or articles with contagious/communicable diseases, hazards associated with driving, traffic control and working in and around traffic.
  • Enforces all applicable codes, ordinances, laws and regulations in order to protect life and property, prevent crime, and promote security.
  • Prevents/discovers commission of crime; apprehends, arrests and processes criminals, fugitives and offenders; writes citations.
  • Responds to calls relayed by dispatchers, including domestic disputes, assaults, burglaries, lost or missing persons searches, public service duties.
  • Conducts preliminary investigations; interviews victims, complainants and witnesses and takes statements; gathers information and evidence; secures crime scenes.
  • Inspects premises of buildings/properties to detect suspicious conditions.
  • Creates/maintains positive public relations with the general public
  • Performs various court-related functions as assigned (e.g., serves warrants, subpoenas, and civil process documents; performs court security functions; monitors/supervises offenders etc.)
  • Provides assistance and back up support to other deputies as necessary; substitutes for co-workers in their absence; performs flexible unit assignments as needed in emergency response; provides emergency response on a twenty-four-hour basis as needed.
  • Inspects and maintains assigned vehicle, uniform, issued equipment, weapons, etc.
  • Confers with supervisors, staff, deputies, and others as necessary to obtain information or resolve problems; contacts command/supervisory personnel by radio, telephone, voice mail, etc., for emergency response and critical incident communications.
  • Communicates effectively and coherently over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications.
  • Prepares reports, logs, citations, forms and other documentations; maintain files, logs and records; performs other clerical duties.
  • Receives various documentations; reviews, processes, responds, forwards, maintains, and or takes other action as appropriate.
  • Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Monitors the entrance of the Courthouse doors to prevent contraband from entering the Courthouse. Ensures no weapons enter the courthouse as well. 
  • Prepares the Courthouse for opening by conducting a patrol of the facility and for closing by ensuring that the facility is secured to prevent unauthorized entry after hours.
  • Operates security scanning.
  • Monitors 2-way radio traffic for internal duress alarms.
  • Monitors inmate movement outside of courthouse, through the hallways, and holding cell.
  • Tracks keycard access and issuance to court facilities.
  • Assists public as needed.
  • Coordinates random daytime patrols of the courthouse and non-judicial offices to identify and prevent unsafe and potentially threatening situations or individuals.
  • Provides security for Probate Court hearings, involuntary mental commitment hearings, Probate Satellite courthouses, and Probate offices.
  • Assists in courtroom security for major criminal cases. 
  • Provides crowd control inside the courthouse. 
  • Provides testimony in court when needed. 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. 
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  
Licenses or Certifications:
Must be 21 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the County’s insurance standards.  
Special Requirements: 
Must possess an Alabama Peace Officers Minimum Standards Certification. Must be willing to work regular and irregular shift work and shift rotations to provide police services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (weekends and holidays included). Shifts are normally 8 or 12 hours in duration but may be extended in the event of emergency, disaster, manpower shortage, workload or work-in-progress, and/or call outs.
  • Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures and strategies to promote effective local, state or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property and institutions.
  • Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality and interests; learning and motivation.
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal laws, legal codes, and court procedures.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar.
  • Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedure and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, and other office procedures and terminology. 
  • Knowledge of Sheriff's Office policies or ability to acquire such knowledge in a short amount of time.
  • Skill in the use and operation of all assigned equipment to include: issued vehicle, emergency equipment, firearms, restraint devices, technical equipment.
  • Skills in defensive driving.
  • Skills in critical thinking to using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Skills in time management.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise and accurate reports.
  • Ability to deal tactfully, but firmly, with offenders, suspects, witnesses and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, court and enforcement agency representatives and the general public.
  • Ability to verbally and effectively communicate with a variety of individuals representing diverse cultures and backgrounds and function calmly in challenging situations which require a high degree of sensitivity, tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to compute mathematical data, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentages with and without a calculator.
  • Ability to comprehend and retain factual information pertaining to laws, statutes and policies, and accurately apply what is learned.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS


The work is generally medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Activities could occasionally require heavy to very heavy work, exerting up to 100 or more pounds of force. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
  • Ability to see details at a distance and at close range (within a few feet of the observer);
  • Ability to hear sirens, alarms, the human voice, and to accurately identify and distinguish between inputs from short and long ranges and clearly hear radio messages;
  • Possess an audible voice for in-person and radio communications;
  • Possess sufficient body strength in order to perform normal duties of the position;
  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium;
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized;
  • Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet;
  • Crouching: Bending the body downwards and forward by bending leg and spine;
  • Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips;
  • Grasping: Applying pressure with the whole hand;
  • Handling: Picking, holding or otherwise working with the whole hand;
  • Hearing: Ability to hear and understand at normal speaking levels with or without correction;
  • Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees;
  • Lifting: Ability to lift and move objects;
  • Manual Dexterity: Primarily with fingers and in picking, pinching or typing;
  • Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions;
  • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion;
  • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward;
  • Reaching: Ability to frequently extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction;
  • Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands and/or fingers;
  • Speaking/Talking: Ability to communicate clearly, accurately, and concisely through speech;
  • Standing:   Particularly for sustained periods of time;
  • Stooping:   Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.  Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles;
  • Visual Acuity: Ability to perform activities such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing, viewing a computer screen/terminal; and /or extensive reading, with or without correction;
  • Walking: ability to move about on foot to accomplish tasks or moving from one work site to another.
