QUALIFICATIONS:
REPORTS TO: Administrator as assigned
JOB GOAL: To meet the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs in relationship to specific needs of all students under their direction
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Establishes positive and respectful relationships with students and families to create supportive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes learning for all students
2. Provides and sustains language rich environment in American Sign Language (ASL) and/or English for deaf students to foster social and academic discourse and comprehension, using multimodal instruction, skill training (signed/viewing, spoken/listening, and/or written language as a heritage language), research-based bilingual education methodology, translanguaging practices, and current effective learning
3. Communicates proficiently in American Sign Language (ASL) and/or English and engage with students using multimodal instruction (signed, spoken, and/or written) scaffolding, multiple ways of representing content, and teaching strategies to address specific needs of student learning, as stipulated in Individual Family Service Plans (IFSPs) and/or Individualized Education Plans (IEPs)
4. Effectively delivers content knowledge (core general education curriculum and or core content connectors) in language of instruction (ASL and/or English) utilizing strategies appropriate to deaf students in Least Restrictive Environment
5. Masters technical vocabulary and key concepts in content areas of instruction, effectively using social and academic language (ASL and/or English) to enhance vocabulary knowledge
6. Differentiates instruction and curriculum access for all students by emphasizing multimodal instruction (auditory, visual, tactile, gestural) activities and incorporating various funds of knowledge from diverse home backgrounds, cultures, styles of learning, and perspectives into curricular activities
7. Assesses and designs measurable and appropriate language (sign, spoken, and written, as appropriate for each student) and content goals based on assessments of student growth to determine level of proficiency for each deaf student
8. Evaluates each student’s learning needs and plans and provides specialized academic instruction to meet specific needs as outlined in IEP
9. Coordinates, manages, and participates in all initial placement, annual review, triennial evaluation, and other needed IEP meetings for special education students
10. Adheres to all mandated special education timelines for IEPs and assessments as required by law, District policy and administrative regulations
11. Implements systems to assess, plan, and provide academic and social skills instruction to support positive behavior in all students
12. Maintains and communicates accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, District policy and administrative regulations, including cumulative record folders, IEPs, attendance reports, and any other reports to parents
13. Coordinates efforts of professional staff to integrate students into general education classrooms and/or activities as outlined in IEP
14. Demonstrates the ability to work collaboratively with families, support providers, general education professionals, community agencies and Deaf community, recognizing and respecting roles and responsibilities in meeting needs of students
15. Participates in ongoing professional development, staff meetings, and other required meetings to improve teaching skills and stay current with best practices in education
16. Establishes and manages a positive classroom behavior system that ensures a safe, inclusive, and productive learning environment that is also clean and free of clutter
17. Develops reasonable and specific rules/expectations of classroom behavior and procedures which are implemented consistently and conducive to high levels of learning
18. Serves as the child's advocate including making referrals to school wide social and academic provided services
19. Upholds and enforces school expectations, Administrative Regulations, and Board policy
20. Carries out assigned student supervision outside the classroom such as yard duty, assemblies, athletic events, extracurricular activities and all emergency drills to ensure student safety
21. Maintains valid up-to-date Pro-Act certification
22. Models personal and professional values of equity, integrity, caring, collaboration, personal and collective accountability
23. Performs other related duties as assigned
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the District’s “Improvement of Professional Services” handbook, Board Policies and Procedures and consistent with collective bargaining agreements when applicable
