A Peer Mentor provides guidance, support, and encouragement to fellow crew members to help them successfully navigate their job duties. Under the general supervision of the SCoCo Crew Leader, the Peer Mentor also performs a variety of tasks related to invasive species removal and the restoration of park areas, working within a team of 10–24 peers. This position involves hands-on fieldwork, including the physical removal of invasive plants such as English ivy, Scotch broom, and other non-native species from local parks.

  • Remove English ivy from trees and surrounding area with a variety of tools
  • Remove English ivy ground cover with tools and by hand
  • Pull or cut Scotch broom with tools or by hand
  • Remove other invasive plant species with tools or by hand
  • Perform work relating to planting and caring of trees, shrubs, and flowers
  • Perform restoration work such as planting native species at various locations
  • Assist mentees in setting and achieving work duties and personal goals
  • Work to create a supportive and inclusive environment
  • Providing feedback to program coordinators/managers on mentee progress
  • Listening to concerns and providing relevant guidance
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor
  • Must be at least 15 years of age
  • Must have worked on the SCoCo crew for at least one season

Work Environment and Physical Effort
This is a non-smoking work environment. Work is performed outdoors at a Park District park location. Exposure to bees and potentially hazardous plans (i.e. poison oak, stinging nettles). The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • Must be able to perform physical requirements of landscaper maintenance at the most rigorous level.
  • May experience exposure to extended periods of sun, rain, cold or hot temperatures, wind and potentially uneven terrain that may contain trip hazards.
  • The ability to perform parks services duties that require sustained, strenuous physical exertion that includes activities such as lifting heavy items up to 50 pounds, stacking, pushing, pulling, bending, twisting, climbing and standing for extended periods.
  • Must be able to hear distress noises and hear and see distress signals in a variety of environments, keeping safety in mind at all times.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, grab, pull and push objects, squat down, stoop, kneel, crouch and jump.
