This opening is for a key software engineering leadership position within a large and dynamic product line providing premier electronic warfare systems for a military aircraft. The software leverages cutting-edge technologies to conduct electronic attack operations, providing critical support to the warfighter by disrupting adversary communication and radar capabilities. This product line consists of several program portfolios that are funded, in a growth phase and expected to continue for years to come.

BAE Systems is seeking a talented and driven, Director I - Software Engineering level individual to join its’ Countermeasure & Electromagnetic Attack Solutions (CEMA) business area in Hudson, New Hampshire where you will work with a dynamic group of professionals who design the products and systems that support enhanced military capabilities, protect national security, and keep critical information and infrastructure secure. As a functional manager, you will support and advocate for your engineering staff through career planning, training, timely performance feedback and formal performance appraisals. In addition, you will support the Electronic Attack Solutions (EAS) product line with staffing forecasts, engineering staff hiring and placement, team building, handling technical issues, implementing process changes and Lifecycle Management (LCM) review activities. This is a multi-faceted position where your management/supervisory duties will account for approximately 25-30% of your time and your software engineering program tasks will account for the remaining 70-75%.


In this growth position you will begin by directly supporting the software engineering manager of a large product line organization consisting of over 130 engineers. You will be an active member of the EAS Software Engineering leadership team, shaping the EAS software engineering culture and process and ensuring that staffing and technical needs of the business area are met. You will work closely with other leaders across a product family of Electronic Attack Solution projects and provide hands-on organization, direction, mentoring and guidance to a talented group of software engineers.
The ideal candidate will have a prior experience in software development, system integration, software estimation, large scale project management, and proven ability to lead and coordinate large teams of software engineering professionals. This role will be critical in sustaining and enhancing the technical and managerial leadership pipeline, spanning across various subsystems, capabilities, and technologies.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the organization, leadership and management of a team of 130 software engineers, overseeing their professional growth and ensuring efficient operations across multiple products/programs
  • Drive the standardization and continuous improvement of software development processes, best practices, and software engineering reuse across the product line
  • Provide informal supervision and mentorship to a leadership team of 10-12 employees, including line-level supervisors, with a focus on career development, performance management and employee engagement. Opportunity for growth and transition to direct supervision within the first year.
  • Collaborate with business leadership to ensure successful staffing, proposal execution, and program management across the product line
  • Attract, engage, and retain high potential employees to support the program areas and resolve resource/staffing issues
  • Identify and develop critical skills required to meet program and business objectives
  • Contribute to the establishment of goals and standards of performance, creation of staffing plans and short and long-term strategic roadmaps/plans for EAS product line
  • Ensure technical content of new business proposals are both technically and financially sound
  • Support Lifecycle Management (LCM) activities as required and support strategic technology planning/IRAD planning within the product line
  • Take hands-on ownership of a major software program ensuring successful execution from start to finish
Because of the need for consistent, in-person collaboration and/or the requirement to perform all work onsite due to the nature of this role, it will be performed fulltime on site. This means work will be conducted on location at a BAE Systems facility 100% of the time.


Required Education, Experience, & Skills
  • Bachelor's Degree or Master’s Degree in computer science, computer engineering, or related field, and minimum of 12 years of work experience or equivalent experience.
  • Secret Security Clearance (active within the past two years).
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, develop, lead, and motivate technical teams ranging between 20 to 50 engineers.
  • People/Functional management experience with proven performance management, mentoring, coaching, and communication skills
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to interface with senior internal personnel on significant organizational matters, often requiring coordination between organizations
  • Experience with managing projects to ensure work scope, schedule, and budget are well defined and maintained
  • Extensive background in distributed systems, embedded systems, and/or application software development.
  • Current knowledge in the technologies, methodologies, processes and tools used in the software industry with a demonstrated track record of deploying these on programs
  • Experience with modern engineering techniques, such as Model Based Engineering, Agile, DevSecOps, Containerization, etc.


Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills
  • Current/active Top Secret security clearance with ability to be cleared TS/SCI
  • Previous experience with building and managing a large engineering organization (75 to 150 engineers)
  • Previous experience with software metrics to support estimating and development productivity
  • Experience developing software and systems for countermeasure and electronic attack solutions products, including Command and Control, Counter-Radar and Counter-Communications subsystems
  • Experience with system integration of large-scale software intensive systems


Pay Information
Full-Time Salary Range: $150370 - $255630

Please note: This range is based on our market pay structures. However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
