What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead Installer position at Backyard Unlimited, LLC?
Lead Installer
Company: Backyard Unlimited
Location: Rocklin, CA
Backyard Unlimited is hiring a Lead Installer to join our installation team in Rocklin, CA. We build gazebos, pavilions, pergolas, and sheds for customers across the U.S. and internationally. If you enjoy hands-on work and seeing a project come together on-site, this role may be a good fit for you.
About the Role: Working as a Lead Installer
The Lead Installer is a high-level construction professional responsible for the end-to-end assembly and interior/exterior finishing of our premium structures and sheds. Unlike standard installation, this role requires a finisher skill set. You will lead a crew through the entire build lifecycle—from rough framing and roofing to the precision installation of shiplap, siding, and basic electrical/plumbing systems. As the onsite captain, you are responsible for ensuring every structure is built to exact blueprint specifications and structural calculations.
Key Responsibilities
- Advanced Carpentry & Finishing: Lead the expert installation of interior and exterior finishes, including shiplap, siding, trim work, and high-end cabinetry/fixtures.
- Structural Framing & Roofing: Oversee and execute rough framing and roofing to ensure every unit is structurally sound and weather-tight according to engineering standards.
- MEP Oversight (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing): Manage and implement basic electrical and plumbing layouts. Ensure all utility "rough-ins" and final finishes are installed safely and functionally.
- Blueprint & Technical Literacy: Read and interpret complex blueprints, architectural drawings, and structural calculations. Ensure the build matches the design to the fraction of an inch.
- Field Leadership & Mentorship: Provide clear direction to a team of installers. Train crew members in finishing techniques and hold them accountable to a "master-craftsman" level of quality.
- Safety & Regulatory Compliance: Act as the primary safety officer. Ensure the team follows all OSHA-aligned safety rules, especially when operating heavy machinery, power tools, or working at heights.
- Logistics & Fleet Coordination: Safely transport structures, tools, and materials via company truck and trailer. Maintain constant communication with the Logistics Manager on job status and site hurdles.
Desired Qualities & Skills
- The "General Contractor" Mindset: A well-rounded expert who understands how different trades (framing, electrical, finishing) work together.
- Problem Solver: Ability to make sound, onsite decisions when field conditions deviate from the blueprints.
- Precision-Oriented: A "measure twice, cut once" philosophy with a deep respect for structural integrity and aesthetic detail.
- Professional Composure: Remains calm and provides clear communication to customers and the team, even during complex, multi-day builds.
Education & Experience
- Expertise: 5 years of general construction experience with a heavy focus on residential remodeling or finishing.
- Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in rough framing, siding, roofing, and interior finish work. Basic knowledge of electrical and plumbing systems is required.
- Licensing: Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record (CDL is a plus).
- Certifications: Forklift certification preferred.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
- Strength & Stamina: Capable of lifting and maneuvering up to 100 lbs. High endurance for full-day physical labor in various weather conditions.
- Travel: Willingness for occasional out-of-town jobs requiring overnight stays.
