Heavy Construction Equipment & Vehicle Mechanic

Brief Overview: Inspect, diagnose, adjust, repair, or overhaul company trucks, dump trucks, mobile mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment, such as excavators, skid steers, bulldozers, graders, and other equipment and tools used in construction.

Educational Requirements:

• High school diploma or greater
• OSHA 30 hour (can be obtained after employment begins)

General Requirements:

• CDL A driver’s license (can be obtained after employment)
• Must have reliable transportation.
• Must have a cell phone.
• Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
• Professional and pleasant.
• Must have 2 year’s experience in related field.

Basic, Social and Technical Skills:

• Communicate effectively in speaking face to face and on the telephone, and writing using forms, text and email.
• Understand written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
• Give full attention to instruction and directions, while taking the time to ask questions when needed.
• Organize and prioritize tasks, as well as managing one’s own time.
• Monitor performance of self and make improvements and take corrective actions.
• Use logical reasoning to solve problems.
• Understand and able to use computers, computer software, fax machines, copiers, and other office equipment, and troubleshoot problems with them when necessary.
• Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses , repair, and maintenance.

Activities and Tasks:

• Read and interpret machine drawings, parts diagrams, basic pneumatics and hydraulics.
• Communicate suggestions and recommend solutions for problems to provide for an efficient operation.
• Perform routine maintenance on equipment
• Watch gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.
• Determine causes of operating errors and decide what to do about it.
• Repair heavy equipment, vehicles, and power tools using the necessary tools in the shop and at job sites.
• Test mechanical products and equipment after repair or assembly to ensure proper performance and compliance with manufacturers' specifications.
• Repair and replace damaged or worn parts.
• Operate and inspect machines or heavy equipment to diagnose defects.
• Diagnose faults or malfunctions to determine required repairs, using engine diagnostic equipment such as computerized test equipment and calibration devices.
• Dismantle and reassemble heavy equipment using hoists and hand tools.
• Clean, lubricate, and perform other routine maintenance work on equipment and vehicles.
• Examine parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges.
• Overhaul and test machines or equipment to ensure operating efficiency.
• Assemble gear systems and align frames and gears.
• Fit bearings to adjust, repair, or overhaul mobile mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment.
• Weld or solder broken parts and structural members, using electric or gas welders and soldering tools.
• Clean parts by spraying them with grease solvent or immersing them in tanks of solvent.
• Adjust, maintain, and repair or replace subassemblies, such as transmissions and crawler heads, using hand tools, jacks, and cranes.
• Adjust and maintain industrial machinery, using control and regulating devices.
• Fabricate needed parts or items from sheet metal.
• Repair, rewire, and troubleshoot electrical systems.
• Assist in researching, ordering, and maintaining parts inventory for services and repairs.
• Manage one's own time.
• Perform annual inspections on all vehicles.
