What are the responsibilities and job description for the Foreman Heavy Equipment Operator position at B L Brown Construction & Excavation Inc?
Brief Overview: Foreman for a pipe crew install storm, sewer and water, and an earthwork crew. Coordinate all activities of the day, supervise the assigned crew, and perform a variety of duties as needed while operating heavy equipment.
Educational Requirements:
- Less than high school diploma
- OSHA 10 hour or greater (can be obtained after employment)
- Excavation and Trench Training (can be obtained after employment)
- Confined Space Training (can be obtained after employment)
- At least 10 years of experience operating heavy equipment.
General Requirements:
- Must be able to work Monday thru Friday and most Saturdays during peak season.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation.
- Must have a cell phone.
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
- Arrive in appropriate attire and ready to work in various weather conditions.
- Be physically fit and able to stand for lengthy periods of time as well as bend, twist, balance, and lift heavy materials or tools.

Activities and Tasks:
- Operate the following with skilled precision: bulldozers, loaders, excavators, backhoes, skid steers, scrapers and motor graders and haul trucks.
- Coordinate machine actions with crew members using hand or audio signals.
- Must be able to rough grade and finish grade.
- Cut and dig to specified grade.
- Install sanitary pipe, storm pipe and water mains and structures.
- Layout pipe routes according to plans.
- Inspect, clean, lubricate, and perform other preventative maintenance activities regarding heavy equipment daily.
- Load and unload equipment to and from the trailer.
- Check slope for conformance to requirements with grade rods, lasers, transit levels.
- Seal joints, as necessary.
- Dig trenches with trenching tools.
- Check pipe to make sure it is not defective.
- Cover pipe with dirt or other material with a shovel when necessary.
- Use hand and power tools to cut pipe.
- Grade and level trenches with tamping machines and tools.
- Make sure pipe and structure install heights are correct.
- Supervise a crew and monitor productivity at the jobsite.
- Check all staking for accuracy.
- Complete Daily Job Reports and Extra Work Order tickets when necessary.
- Before you leave the shop in the morning, make sure you have all necessary tools or materials loaded on the company truck.
- Make sure to complete a DVIR and clean out the truck and fuel it at the end of the day for the company truck you are driving.
- Ensure the entire crew is following safety procedures located in the Company Safety Program.
- Solve problems that arise on the jobsite. Communicate with our project manager or the site superintendent as needed for assistance.
- Make sure the jobsite is secure and safe before you leave the job at the end of the workday.
- Train or supervise others in laying pipe.
- Complete other general labor and construction related duties as needed.
- Order project materials and schedule deliveries when requested.
- Update utility plans with redlines to show actual install locations as work gets completed.
- Make sure nothing that can easily be stolen is left on the jobsite.
