Operations Manager

Azcon Metals is seeking an Operations Manager at our Duluth, MN scrap yard location. Responsible to oversee daily production, safety, efficiency, and profitability, managing intake (weighing, sorting, grading), processing, inventory, equipment maintenance, staff, customer/vendor relations, and compliance with environmental/safety rules (OSHA, EPA), ensuring smooth flow from material arrival to shipment. Key duties involve strong leadership, problem-solving in a fast-paced environment, and balancing financial goals with operational excellence in a heavy industrial setting.

Key Responsibilities

• Production & Workflow: Direct all phases from material intake (weighing, grading) to processing/cutting and shipment.
• Safety & Compliance: Enforce strict safety protocols (OSHA, EPA), manage hazardous materials (like radioactive items), and ensure environmental standards are met, sometimes with specialized detection/storage.
• Asset & Equipment Management: Oversee maintenance and efficient use of heavy machinery (forklifts, loaders, shears) and facility upkeep.
• Team Leadership: Recruit, train, schedule, and manage staff, fostering teamwork and high performance.
• Customer & Vendor Relations: Build relationships, resolve issues, and negotiate terms with suppliers and customers.
• Financial Oversight: Control costs and ensure profitability.
• Inventory Control: Manage accurate tracking and storage of ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

Essential Skills & Qualifications

• Experience: Proven experience in scrap metal, recycling, or heavy industrial operations.
• Leadership: Strong, decisive leadership with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Technical: Familiarity with scrap grading, processing methods, computer systems (scale software), and heavy equipment operation.
• Problem-Solving: Ability to multitask, manage changing priorities, and resolve unexpected issues.
• Education: High school diploma required; Bachelor's in Business/Engineering often preferred.

Qualifications

• Solid understanding of profit & loss management and financial analysis.
• Experience in business development, sales strategies, and project management.
• Skilled in process improvement methodologies such as Lean or Six Sigma is a plus.
