Duties
- Prepare the operating room by arranging surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment according to procedure requirements.
- Assist surgeons and nurses during operative procedures by passing instruments, suturing wounds, and managing sterile fields with meticulous attention to aseptic technique.
- Monitor patient vital signs such as blood pressure, pulse, respiration rate, and oxygen saturation during surgeries to ensure stability and safety.
- Collect and document data related to patient status, procedure details, and intraoperative observations using electronic health record (EHR) systems like Epic or other EMR platforms.
- Support infection control protocols by adhering to strict sterilization procedures and maintaining a sterile environment throughout all phases of surgery.
- Assist with patient positioning, skin preparation, and wound closure activities including suturing under supervision.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in emergency medicine and trauma centers to provide critical support during high-acuity cases such as Level I or Level II trauma scenarios.
- Maintain accurate medical records by documenting procedures, patient responses, and post-operative care instructions in hospital information systems.
- Participate in ongoing training related to anatomy knowledge, physiology, and advanced critical care practices such as ICU or PICU support.
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies on infection control, safety standards, and OSHA regulations for handling hazardous materials.
Skills
- Extensive knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and acute care procedures necessary for supporting complex surgeries.
- Proven experience in hospital environments with a focus on OR experience or ambulatory surgery centers.
- Strong analysis skills for interpreting vital signs data and recognizing signs of patient distress or instability during procedures.
- Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems such as Epic or other EMR platforms for accurate documentation of medical records.
- Skilled in aseptic techniques and infection control practices essential for maintaining sterile fields in high-stakes environments like trauma centers or pediatric units.
- Ability to perform suturing and assist with wound management efficiently under supervision.
- Experience working within Level I or Level II trauma centers, PICU settings, or critical care units is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with hospital medicine protocols including data collection for quality assurance and patient safety initiatives.
- Capable of handling emergency situations swiftly using basic life support (BLS) skills combined with critical thinking and calmness under pressure.
- Excellent communication skills for effective collaboration with surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals.
