Title: UAS Drone Engineer Intern

Location: Huntsville, AL

Position Status: Full Time

Work Schedule

Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM (flexible around academic schedule).

Hours may adjust slightly during project surges, with advance notice.

Brief Job Description

The UAS Engineering Intern will gain hands-on experience supporting the development, integration, and testing of unmanned aerial systems (UAS). This internship is designed to provide practical exposure to engineering workflows, prototype development, and testing processes in an educational and project-focused setting.

Key Responsibilities (Intern-Level)

The intern will learn, assist, and support in the following areas:

Design & Integration Support

  • Assist with CAD modeling, 3D printing preparation, and prototype build tasks.
  • Support UAS subsystem integration activities under supervision.
  • Document design updates, assembly procedures, and experimental results.

Test & Data Support

  • Assist in setting up ground equipment, instrumentation, and test materials for flight tests.
  • Help with data collection and basic analysis during flight tests or simulations.
  • Observe flight test procedures, safety meetings, and Test Readiness Reviews.

Compliance & Standards Exposure

  • Learn about FAA and military standard requirements related to UAS platforms.
  • Assist with maintaining engineering documentation that supports compliance activities.

General Learning and Professional Development

  • Complete mentoring assignments provided by the supervising engineer.
  • Contribute to intern capstone or end-of-term project (if applicable).
  • Perform other learning-aligned tasks as assigned.

Requirements

  • Current student pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or a related STEM field.
  • Familiarity with CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) is a plus.
  • Interest in UAS, drones, aerospace systems, or robotics.
  • Willingness to learn hands-on engineering practices.
  • Strong communication, organization, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to pass background check and drug screen (if required).

Physical Requirements

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Position may require typing and reading from a computer screen. Must have sufficient mobility to include but not limited to: bending, reaching, climbing, turning, and kneeling to complete daily duties in a timely and efficient manner. There is a possibility that due to parking availability and location of work, walking moderate to long distances may be required. Must be able to lift, move, and transport items frequently over 10 pounds.

Work Environment

Generally, work is conducted in an inside office environment, but may also involve some outside work depending on the task. The inside environment may be in an office or cubicle with close quarters, low to moderate noise, and bright or dim lighting. Outside work may include various environmental conditions including warm and cold climates and while on travel.
