What are the responsibilities and job description for the Perception Engineer position at Axiom Global Technologies?
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Perception Engineer III to lead the design, development, and deployment of advanced perception algorithms and sensor-integration solutions for autonomous vehicle platforms. This role requires a high degree of technical ownership and autonomy, with responsibility for solving complex perception challenges, supporting system integration, and mentoring junior engineers.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design, development, testing, and deployment of perception algorithms for LiDAR, radar, camera, and sensor-fusion applications.
- Architect and develop real-time C processing pipelines for object detection, classification, tracking, and sensor fusion in embedded environments.
- Define sensor selection criteria, integration standards, and validation processes for new and existing perception systems.
- Investigate and resolve complex perception failures through root-cause analysis, algorithm refinement, and system-level troubleshooting.
- Collaborate with planning, controls, and systems engineering teams to ensure perception outputs integrate effectively with the broader autonomy architecture.
- Deploy and configure perception systems at customer sites and provide technical leadership during system integration and validation.
- Mentor Perception Engineers I and II, conduct code reviews, and provide technical guidance and best practices.
- Document system architecture, algorithm design decisions, technical findings, and lessons learned to support knowledge sharing across the team.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
- 4β7 years of experience developing perception systems for autonomous vehicles or robotics platforms.
- Expert-level proficiency in C (C 11 or newer) with experience developing production-grade, multithreaded applications on Linux.
- Hands-on experience with at least two of the following:
- LiDAR point-cloud processing
- Automotive radar processing
- Image processing/object recognition
- Sensor fusion and object tracking
- Experience with ROS or ROS2 and DDS or publish-subscribe messaging architectures.
- Strong understanding of machine learning and AI techniques deployed in embedded C environments.
- Proficiency in Python 3 or MATLAB for prototyping and analysis.
- Advanced understanding of linear algebra, probabilistic estimation, and coordinate transformations.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to remain stationary at a computer workstation for extended periods throughout the workday.
- Ability to operate computers and standard office equipment continuously as required.
- Ability to effectively perform job responsibilities using computer monitors.
- Ability to communicate and exchange information effectively in person, by phone, and through electronic communication.
- Ability to move throughout an office environment as required.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a hands-on autonomous vehicle/robotics perception engineer with strong C and Linux expertise and demonstrated experience across multiple sensor modalities. The candidate should be comfortable owning complex perception problems, working across autonomy engineering teams, leading customer-site integrations, and mentoring junior engineers.
