Job Title: Medical Transcriptionist
Location: Boston, MA
Position Summary:
- Works in the pathology department reviewing and editing surgical pathology gross descriptions and final diagnoses, prepared by the pathologist assistants using dragon software.
- Ensures that the transcription and grammar is correct, complete, and has a consistent style.
- Types surgical pathology final reports into the laboratory information system.
- Ensures outside consult reports are typed in a timely manner into the patient’s pathology report.
- Coordinates frozen section procedures between the operating room and the pathology department.
- Packages slides/block requests to various outside hospitals for second opinions.
- Ability to answer and triage busy phone service.
Essential Responsibilities / Duties:
- Responsible for accessioning surgical and consult specimens, ensuring MRN, DOB, SPECIMEN SITE, REFERRING PHYSICIAN assignments match with the correct patient.
- Reviews and edits any incorrect grammar, spelling, specimen sites, date of service on the gross description.
- Updates various logs (consult, patient demographics).
- Reviews and edits working drafts, prepared by speech recognition software, ensuring that the transcription is complete and has a consistent style.
- Translates medical standard abbreviations from the referring physician’s clinical history into the appropriate long form suitable for a pathology report.
- Proofreads and identifies inconsistencies, errors, and missing information within a report that could compromise patient care.
- Follows up via phone or email with the healthcare provider to ensure the accuracy of the information as per the requisition if needed.
- Follows patient confidentiality guidelines and legal documentation requirements as per HIPAA.
- Enters finalized medical reports received from BMC health center partners via OCHIN web portal.
- Files glass slides and paper requisitions.
- Maintains files and records according to standards set by JCAHO, CAP, OSHA, and HCFA.
- Logs out and logs in, slides/blocks via BMC COPATH system for current record keeping.
- Monitors voicemail to respond to messages left on voice mailbox.
- Monitors fax machines to ensure all faxed reports, requests are being sorted and input into patient’s reports.
- Utilizes hospital’s Values as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the division’s hospital mission.
- Completes all required training in Workday and Media Lab.
- Compiles information from various reports; inputs into computer, prints, and distributes to residents and pathology staff.
- Must adhere to all of BMC’s RESPECT behavioral standards.
Job Requirements:Education:
- High School diploma with one-year certificate program or 2-year associate’s degree with coursework in anatomy, medical terminology, legal issues relating to healthcare documentation, and English grammar and punctuation.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Required:
- Completed postsecondary training in medical transcription preferred.
Experience:
- One to two years’ experience as a medical transcriptionist.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Good understanding of the English language and grammar.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy and physiology as pertaining to pathology.
- Able to work under short deadlines.
- Comfortable using computers and word-processing software and able to type 40 to 50 words per minute.
