As the Head of TPA Technical – Liability & Workers’ Compensation, Americas you will play a critical role in leading a team of experienced claim professionals that handle TPA technical claims oversight and support multiple AXA XL business units across the Americas that handle liability and workers’ compensation coverage. You will be a key subject matter expert and will collaborate with other Claims colleagues to implement our strategy on claim activities and best practices.
AXA XL is a strategic, hands-on Head of TPA Technical to lead technical management and governance of Third-Party Administrator (TPA) handled claims for Liability and Workers’ Compensation claims across the Americas. This executive will set the technical strategy, ensure best-practice claim handling, manage TPA relationships and spend, drive data-driven decision making, and cultivate high-performing teams. The role requires deep expertise in multi-state liability and WC claims, strong vendor management, regulatory awareness, and the ability to collaborate across Underwriting, Actuarial, Claims Legal, Compliance, and other key partners. You will directly manage four Managers who run the day-to-day TPA technical activities.
What you’ll be doing
What will your essential responsibilities include?
- Provide line leadership for Managers and their teams that manage TPA technical oversight for high-value liability and workers comp claims across the Americas.
- Lead with a focus on technical excellence: coverage analysis, investigation, evaluation, reserving, and resolution, ensuring compliance with state and federal requirements.
- Work with our Claims Account Management team to govern TPA relationships and performance: onboarding, vendor management, audits, service levels, and cost containment.
- Collaborate with Internal Stakeholders (Underwriting, Actuarial, Claims Legal, Compliance, Regional Practice Leaders) to optimize outcomes, control claim expense, and align on exposure and strategy.
- Drive data-driven decision making: establish and monitor KPIs/dashboards, identify trends, and provide transparent reporting to leadership and external stakeholders.
- Lead continuous improvement to standardize processes, leverage technology, and enhance customer service for policyholders and brokers.
- Manage risk across TPAs, including governance, privacy, data security, and regulatory compliance.
- Represent AXA XL externally as a trusted technical leader on liability and WC claim strategies; engage with TPAs, brokers, and clients as needed.
- Oversee day-to-day claim operations: approve coverage determinations and referrals, and coordinate with Claim Legal or outside counsel when required.
- Ensure consistent application of AXA XL policies and governance across claims; manage reserve and settlement authority within defined parameters.
- Monitor and optimize TPA spend; drive vendor management and procurement practices.
- Lead talent development, coaching, performance management, and succession planning for the four Managers; foster collaboration and continuous improvement.
- Stay current with evolving regulations and industry standards; implement risk mitigation and process improvements to protect AXA XL’s reputation and financial strength.

- Demonstrated leadership in diversified claims environments, with deep experience in liability and WC claims management, including high-value or complex matters; proven ability to lead multiple managers.
- Proven ability to negotiate, settle, and resolve complex files; analytical and judgment skills; capable of working independently with a sense of accountability.
- Proficient knowledge of multi-jurisdictional insurance coverage law and claim regulations; committed to ethical standards and high levels of professionalism.
- Effective coaching and people-management capabilities; able to set expectations, develop talent, and hold people accountable for performance across four managerial teams.
- Excellent verbal and written communication; ability to influence internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
- Robust organizational and time-management skills; adaptable to a fast-paced environment with multiple concurrent priorities.
- Strategic thinker with a track record of driving continuous improvement, process optimization, and technology-enabled changes.
- Effective collaboration and relationship-building skills to work effectively with underwriting, actuarial, legal, compliance, TPAs, brokers, and customers.
- Education: Undergraduate degree required; law degree or professional designations (e.g., CPCU, ARM) preferred. State adjuster licenses or equivalent credentials often required.

The U.S. base salary range for this position is USD ($155,300 - $258,900).
Actual pay will be determined based upon the individual’s skills, experience and location. We strive for market alignment and internal equity with our colleagues’ pay.
